so far i've had my horses tetanus, treated by the vet, gelded, transported and one sad PTS and not one have i been asked for passports. what a waste of money it's not like it was all the same vet 3 different practice and about 5 different vet and not once have i been asked.

The only purpose of a passport is to prevent certain medicines and drugs entering the human food chain and causing problems. The carcas will also be worthless.

As you have not sent a horse for human consumption, or to sale where it might be bought for human consumption... then it does not matter! Even then, they are only interested in what the hore has been medicated with in the last 30 days or so.

The meat industry relies upon honesty... but so do declarations about most meat that enters the human food chain... it is not just horses, but all animals. A good reason to be a veggi! They only test a sample of the carcases, so if someone lies about how an animal is medicated it can easily slip through the net.

Its actually the owners responsibility to ensure the passport is updated and presented to the vet and all medication is recorded accurately as the owner is where the buck will stop if anything goes amiss in the animals life

My pony was shipped over from Germany at the end of last year and although the boarder controls/ferry people glanced at the paperwork, they did not once look in the actual horsebox to make sure it was a horse we were carrying! We could have had 40 illegal immigrants in there for all anyone knew!!
Sorry, a bit off topic, but still needed a little rant!

Yep, me too, had my old lad put down by a known cattle/horse disposal company and never even mentioned the word passport, not knocking the company what so ever, they were very good and understanding etc, I was very upset at the time and of course it was the last thing on my mind but yes I certainly agree with you.

Also I've had to ask vets myself if treatment needs noted on the passport, they too don't seem to be bothered about it neither.

People using false passports too which really annoys me when there people like us paying to have the vet out to verify/issue our horses with them.

Not got problem with passports but unless we all pull together and use the system properly then yep its a farse!
