Passports

I'm still looking for my perfet four legged friend, saw a lovely gelding a couple of days ago and got a second viewing today. The woman said his passport had gone missing but hadd the vet come out and do the passport sheet (identification ect) and showed me that. It looked ok. would you buy a horse if this was the case? Remember i'm new to all this!

If horses passport had gone missing then in theory she should have a record of who it was issued by and be able to obtain a duplicate. If she bought it without a passport then i would be very wary.

Bottom line is you can buy a horse a without a passport - but she should not sell a horse without a passport.

However, if the horse meets your criteria and passes a 5 stage vetting, it wouldn't put me off buying.

i would wait untill horse had new passport , having said that , this spring i was given a 20 month colt by a dealer friend who.,d bred him , no passport of course, i simply sent off application and recieved it a week later , no questions asked about previous owner , bit of a joke really i could passport any horse i liked , it doesnt prove ownership at all.

As has been said, she should get a duplicate passport.

A passport does not prove ownership. The only legal purpose of a passport is to prevent certain drugs entering the human food chain.

It is legal for you to buy a horse without a passport. It is not legal to sell a horse without a passport.

It is simple to obtain a passport. I wouldn't let it put you off.

The lack of, or presence of a pasport says nothing about whether the horse is stolen or its health. Most auction houses issue instant passports on sale days.

I have bought lots of horses withuot passports over the years, and I have never had a problem getting them passported. I have never been asked any questions, even when the horse is not young.
