Why is it that a horses passport is not proof of ownership but when you get stopped by the police on the way to a show they ask you if the horse is yours and too see the passport ? This has happened to myself a few times but keep getting repeatedly told and on the front of my passport it states that it is not proof of owner ship so technically how can we prove that we own our horses?

We cant.. Its stupid.. My horse is microchipped and registered to me by the micro chip.. but the passport is not proof of ownership.. its stupid and doesnt make sense..

Hate to start this argument, but microchipping is not proof of ownership either.

It only proves that you had the horse in your care at the time it was microchipped. Therefore you could argue that you own the microchip, but proving you own the horse is not the same.

I suspect most of us do not have a receipt for our horses unless purchased at auction or from VAT registered stud/dealer.
I have owned my horses for so long I doubt I could find a receipt.

i actually ask for receipts when i buy a horse from a private owner, get some funny looks but hey.
and they go in a file with a section for each horse
my 4 year old was a present off my OH but was receipted too

Societies like the BHHS issue a seperate document that is signed by the vendor and stamped by the Society to show the legal change of ownership. Fench passports come with a tear off page that is proof of ownership. Certificates of Ownership are common in Germany. Just the Brits that are backward.

I just got the seller of my horse, to write on a bit of paper the amount I paid, a short description of the horse and her signature. As people have said that is proof of owner ship.
