Passports

Hi guys,

I dont know if anyone is going to know a solution to this problem but i'm going to give it a go anyway. I recently brought a horse who was in a very sorry state. Had no intention of getting another as i have my youngster to work on but couldnt turn this mare down. Had her from the same person my filly came off and they said if no-one had her soon they was going to leave her in the field to starve as she was no use to them.

Whether they were saying this knowing i would have her is another story, but i've seen the state of some other horses that have been through them and couldnt take the chance.

Anyway, she's picking up nicely now and looking much happier with life. I'm starting to plan out the coming year, and bringing her back into work and getting her out to a few local shows (not to compete, to see how she deals with the atmosphere) The main problem being she doesnt have a passport. I know i was very silly here not to insist i had it before i paid for her but just wanted to get her away from them ASAP. Have tried contacting them since as they said she was passported, they just couldnt find it at that time with no luck, phone just keeps ringing out. I have no idea who the passport was done by so cant contact them for a duplicate. They did say she was an ex-racer so have booked the vet to come out and scan from a microchip which hopefully will throw up some info on her. If she's not chipped where do i go from here? I know i cant apply for another if she already has one, but to be honest, i cant even be sure she does.

You can apply for another passport - I'd just do it as it sounds as if they don't have one, or if they do have no intention of passing it on to you (although of course it was actually illegal for them to sell her to you without one.....)

Your next move is to also inform the WHW of your concerns of the other animals there so that some affirmative action can be taken against these awful sounding people.

Also get your vet to check for a microship.

You should make a complaint to your local trading standards officer that they cannot produce a passport for the horse they have sold you as it is an offence. Why should you get in to trouble for applying for a a passport for a horse that should already have one. They will also deal with any animal welfare issues when they visit.

We were sold a pony and then discovered she didn't actually have a passport after the exchange was made. We just applied for a new one and no-one flagged it up even though the pony was 16. Wasn't mentioned by anyone and no trouble caused.

This would of course loose her ex-racer status as you couldn't provide proof, if you ever had a desire to compete her in ex-racer classes.

If its a tb registered with weathetbys born after 1998 (I think, or very near that year) it will be microchipped
