I am just getting round to sending my horses passports off for change of ownership.
My first horse has gone on loan (I know I should of given her the passport but I need to put it in my name first, then I will give it her).
His is with the Pleasure horse society, I have tried to ring a few times and there is never an answer. I have owned him for a year now- If I send them a letter, passport and cheque will I get a fine for not notifying them within the 30days? Also will I need to send them proof of ownership? I don't think I have the reciept anymore?

Also my other horses passport is with the BSPA, I have spoke to someone in the office and they said they needed proof of ownership, so I had to get the old owner to forward one on from Ireland as I never had from one her (I never even met her when I bought him!) She has now forwarded this to me. The BSPA said not to worry as this is common. Does anyone know how much to change of Ownership for BSPA is? I have £40 in my head for some reason, but havent been able to get hold of them to ask price?

Thanks

I have never had to provide proof of ownership when I have changed names on passports. Neither have I done it within 30 days, and have not been fined...

All the BSPA charges are on their website iirc.

When I bought my horse I DID NOT HAVE TO PROVIDE OWNERSHIP DETAILS EITHER. No clue about the fines.

When I bought my pony I had to sign a statutory declaration at solicotors because two previous owners had not changed ownership details. I had sent them the bill of sale though. This was with Wels cob and pony society. I typed the declaration myself and a solicitor charged me £5 to counter sign it.

If the passports are signed by the seller (or the person named on the passport if another owner has had the horse and not changed details) you will not have to prove ownership, just send the passport off with the details and payment. They will not report you for not changing details, let's face it, they just want your money, and because they charge so much to change it very few people change the details on the passports

I dont think the previous owners of my horses have signed their passports either.....but then, neither of them had ever put the horses in their name either....

IMO, most passports are a waste of time.....My youngster had one that was wrong (wrong height...difficult, but 2 hands out!; and wrong mane and tail colour), but Defra said he couldnt have a new passport as he had one, so now I have a passport with alterations all over it so that I dont get fined if I am stopped, for having the wrong horse!!

I think it will all be better now that they micro chip everything, but there is still so much room for error, and I certainly wouldnt trust a passport to tell me the truth about a horse....
