Well, I've lost her bloomin passport. Am so annoyed!

I have contacted the agency that supplied the original, it will cost £55 to replace it (there was no info in it from them!!) and I need the signature of the person last registered as her keeper (the person who imported her and then brought her never registered as her owners) who is her breeder in Ireland. All of which seems expensive, long winded and without a high chance of sucess (she left Ireland over 6 years ago)!

Fortunatly I do have a plan of her markings from her 5 stage vetting so at least I don't need to pay out for another.

On having a google search I came across http://horsepassportagency.com/ where it seems I can relatively easily get another for £17.50 by the vets calling them with her microchip number, then I log on and pay and hey presto out comes a passport.

Since the original passport is lost (so in effect there isn't a passport in existence?), then is it a crime to apply for another that is not from the original passport issueing authority?

I am loath to pay so much extra for nothing extra, if you see what I mean! Her original passport had the wrong age in, no details on her marking chart (she is grey, but she has a snip and whorls over her so not totally blank!) no breeding at all.

Anyone done this before or have any advice? I am totally new to passports as before this mare I had a 10 year break from horses - no passport worries then!

Because the passport is lost, does NOT mean there is not one in exsistence (the fact you have lost it says there IS one). She is registered somewhere....
So yes....knowing there is a passport out there for her, you cant get a new one. You must get a duplicate.
You can however when you get the dulpicate ask for the updated details to be put on it.

This is why the whole pasport business is such a nightmare! I don't honestly know the answer to your question

It seems wrong that the original issuing agency should not be the one to produce a copy for you, and that you can get another passport from a completely different agency..... on that basis, anyone could repassport any horse and it makes a complete farce of the system.

I look forward with interest to the replies as I'm not answering your question as I don't know the answer - it just seems to be wrong that it is possible to do it :/

I had a horse a couple of years ago with a passport from the Horse Passport Agency - it wasn't worth the paper it was written on - it had his year of birth, the fact that he was a brown gelding - and no other information - no height, no breeding info, no past owners - nothing. Waste of time!

As she already has a passport, I'm afraid you legally (if not morally) should stump up the £55 and get it replaced. It sounds like it will be a massive paper trail, but thats why passports need to be kept very safe.

Do you have horse insurance? If so does this include any cover for loss of passport? I know we used to include the cover in the basic cover we offered under the equine policy when i did horse insurance.

Thanks for your replys, just seems such an odd system and I can't find a clear list of rules about it all!

I agree that the 'correct' thing would be to pay the original passport issueing authority, but it just seems so much money, esp if it isn't sucessful.

She isn't insured as I keep a savings account for her instead.

I'm just mad that it is lost at all. My darling OH had a 'tidy up' during which it magically evaporated although he didn't touch or move it, humph! Annoyed much?!!!

Well thats easy then......make him pay for the passport and ensuing fee's!:D
He wont be so keen to tidy your passports away in future!

Ah, but unfortunatly it was actually the faries you see, he never saw or touched the passport!! Pre tidy up it was where it always lives (on account of being rather important), post tidy up it has evaporated into thin air!!! Drives me nuts!
