Now that it is illegal to own an equine without a passport, websites should make it so that a valid passport number is required to be entered before a horse can be listed for sale, this should enable the website to make a direct link to the National Equine Database (NED) to ensure the correct horse is being advertised. No passport, no advert. After all you have to have a passport to put your horse in an auction sale these days. Microchipping them and associating the microchip number with the passport through your Passport Issueing Office (PIO), as is now law with all new Passports issued, is also a very good idea, as long as all vets scan horses for the microchip and check with the NED before issueing a new passport. I appreciate it won't stop all selling of equines without passports but with the number of horses stolen these days everything possible should be done to reduce the chance of horses being sold unlawfully.

Not that I'm planning to sell my horse but how would this work as he has an italian passport as he came via Italy when he was imported from south America? This would only work for horses with UK passports.

I suspect that magazines and websites that are used for advertising would have a similar stance on this as they do to photos on adverts with riders with no hats on - that they can't be held responsible for contents of adverts.

It's a good idea in theory - but as other posters have said, would only work with UK passported horses.
