So if some people don't bother to get them... is the passport system a waste of time?

It's got nothing to do with wether some people don't bother with them. It's a stealth tax, through and through!! Also, useless, because horses that go through sales rings, can be issued with new passports by the sales company prior to going through the ring - often without even being scanned for a micro-chip! We know this, as it happened to an ex-HHO horse!!

Also, they are not even a document that proves ownership!

I think passports are a good thing in so much as it is a bit harder now to change the identity of a horse which isn't being sold thru the sales. It's age should now roughly be right, and you can look its competion record up.

All my horses have had passports but I've never put them in my name so I don't know if that makes me illegal or not. Anyone know?

Agree with you, My mare has a Weatherby's passport, I could quite easily get another one with a different company, give her a new name and unknown breeding, yet if i don't have one i could get fined £5000 , plus we have been stopped when travelling by the police who asked to see the horses passports

Whether you feel its a waste of time or not it is now LAW that you have a passport for your horse, to transport it, and its required at competition venues.

Selling a horse with no passport is illegal and some vets will be retiscent to treat with certain drugs if the passport isnt availabale and up to date.

For the sake of a few quid its better to get one surely.

Oh I have them for the 3 horses I have

I got mine done but didnt know the exact age of the two ponies so its a guess and may be a couple of years out. My new pony's age was also a guess. We did it by looking a their teeth but with no papers or history it is still a guess

I have one but as others have said - it concerns me that the same horse, could, in theory have multiple passports. (and i know more than one person who has re-registered a horse for one reason or another incl lost passports etc)

Also, when stopped so the police can look at then they dont have a monkeys what they are actually looking at! some look at the vacs sheet, others the ID paper, Others can be fobbed off with breed certifiactes (yup - we had lots of horses on the lorry that day!)

Imported horses passports are often in french or german and look totally different - one very polite but misguided officer even tried to tell us one of the ponies passports wasnt valid because it was south american! (polo ponies)

to much grey area and to many 'options'

IMHO

When we have all got our passports, the government can look up where they are all kept and tax the yard owners for their businesses. So all the people who are doing their friend a favour and collecting a tenner a week, will end up with a massive tax bill one day landing on their doorstep

I think if they had been introduced in a different way that further down the line, they would be very useful. At the moment though, I do think they are a waste of time.
I do have them for all of mine, I hasten to add.

TT - that can't really happen (good theory though) as the address on the Pasport is the keepers home address, not necessarily where the horse is kept.
