So I’ve been told my TB has suffered a pastern cut… apparently it was 4 inches and the yard are telling me she will be ok in a couple days. Can a horse recover that quick from this type of injury?

Asking as I have been reading up and have found some horror stories and thinking the worst :(

She’s on full livery, and I wasn’t around at the weekend when it happened. They’ve bandaged her up etc (no pics annoyingly) and is on box rest / in hand walk. Just wondering what experiences other people have had and if it’s something to seriously worry about?

Our ISH cut his pastern in the field, blood everywhere and we didn’t know how deep it had gone. Emergency vet call out, IV antibiotics, stitches and after a few days the vet put the leg in plaster as the wound kept opening up despite the world’s thickest bandage. He was on strict box rest for four weeks in total. Thankfully the cut missed his tendon by millimetres so he didn’t need surgery. I’m amazed your yard hasn’t called the vet out for something potentially very serious

I would have expected a vet to have seen that straight away.

We deal with a lot in the yard ourselves but a 4in cut that was more than a graze anywhere on the body would have resulted in a vet visit to stitch/staple. If nothing else it would have needed to be cleaned and flushed out properly.

This was done racing, it was just through skin but all the way through skin. The tendon sheath was distended from the trauma but that's all. We did have to get the flap cut off about 6 days later but we expected that. It had done its job and the wound had started healing well from the inside out. Whilst he did not have a cast on he did have a big bandage and 4 or 5 week on box rest.

Thanks everyone.

I went up this morning to see as bandages could come off, is a slight graze and not infected. (I don't know where they got 4inches from).

Took her out her stable this morning, and there is a drastic difference with the way she is walking so popped her on the walker. Will keep her on box rest for the next few days and monitor closely.

Some over reach boots are probably in order!

Personally, I'd get a vet for a laceration of any size nowadays, a course of antibiotics is a small price to pay. Better safe than sorry and there is no way you can know if it's infected or not in that short space of time.

I hate to be bleak, but I lost seven year old to septicaemia in August further to what was literally a scratch that showed no signs of infection for almost 72 hours.
