My mare has had feathermites most of her life (before I got her). I’ve managed to cure 3 legs but one has a persistent problem. I think it’s dermatitis, rather than mud fever as there aren’t scabs as such just greasy crusty bits. She’s not lost any hair, and as far as I can see, the skin isn’t raw (she has black skin). I literally can’t see anything once I’ve cleaned it. She has big folds of skin which I’m guessing is the problem, or it could be the symptom as this leg has bigger creases than the others. I’m guessing the vet will want her to stay in which is a bit of a problem as my stables are small and she’s big! She lives out usually with a hardstanding. Currently there’s a few puddles so I can’t keep her legs totally dry there either.

Is this always a vet job? Any miracle cures? Thanks in advance.

Have you tried Sudocrem? It’s my ‘go to’ for anything like this. I usually wash with a weak dilution of hibiscrub and dry completely (very important the area is kept dry as you can) then sudocrem morning and night. Good luck
