It was thrush! As he trimmed her frog he noticed the top layer peeled off without much effort and was a bit soft. The frog extends up the back of the foot into the heel and this is what this crack was. He's cut it away and the foot looks perfectly clean and healthy underneath.

Yeah, he didn't know what it was at first but cut away anyway at the frog and then realised what it was. Wasn't smelly or anything but he said that's what it must have been....or at least a form of it.

If ever you go to America there is some brill stuff called THRUSH BUSTER, works a treat. I use it on my boy as he has quite deep central clefts so prone to this...glad it was nothing serious though

Patches too gets a deep cleft in her frog. Farrier said it's like a little pocket but instead of getting normal thrush, she got a small line of it that came out through the frog and up the back of her heel. Very weird. But all sorted now thankfully.

Thanks for the tip though. Will check it out.

Excellent news glad she is sorted

bit weird though thrush with no smell or black gunk. When my lads had it recently- Mcfly had it the worst and he has deep clefts too- they had smelly gunk in the clefts and some in the centre of the frog which left a small hole when it was scrubbed and picked out. Big lad only had a touch in his frogs. Farrier came on Monday and trimmed them both and said that it was not bad at all and I had done a good job with it so was relieved as it is the first time I have encountered thrush before.
To be honest I would never have thought it was thrush your horse had. It just goes to show that books and texts are not always right and that it is why forums like this where horse owners and riders can exchange news are very important

Good it was something simple - now you mention it - Cairo has not had these cracks for ages - but there again since being without shoes he has not suffered from thrush - maybe a spray of stockholm tar in this area in future will help - I used to spray Cairo's sole, frog, heels frequently - but now only once or twice a month for "maintenance".
