Hi, after a bit of advice for one of my 2 year old Shetlands. In the last few weeks his coat has gone a bit patchy. Nowhere is actually bald, but looking at him you can see dark areas where there is less coat (he is golden dun, so underneath is dark). He is currently moulting and winter coat is beginning to come through.

A while ago he had a cough and I was advised to give him some Benylin - it was about a week later the coat started going patchy, so I stopped giving it to him as I wondered if there was something in it causing a reaction. But 2/3 weeks on its still the same.

I suspected lice (other Shetland and all other horses fine though) and I Deosected him and no difference. He's has lice before and he is not showing any of the same signs he did before. He isn't bothered by it, they aren't sore or particularly itchy, but he always loves a scratch anyway!!

I recall this happening in Spring 2013 when he was a yearling and changed from winter to summer coat. He was treated for ringworm to no avail and it just improved by itself.

Any ideas? It doesn't seem to be affecting him but he looks like an uncared for pony, which he certainly isn't!

Are you sure it isn't just the coat changing? As she got rather old my girl would fail to lose a little of her old winter coat by the time her new winter coat was coming in. Her summer coat would go bright flame yellow/orange before it started to shed so that meant she had her old coat along her belly line, her bright summer coat and her winter coat coming in much darker. She could definitely be described as patchy!

I am thinking towards that purely because its happened before. There are a few (about three) areas which are bigger patches but they look more like 'accidental grooming nips'!

I don't mind it from a cosmetic POV as long as it goes away, but he honestly looks like a rescue pony!
