Hello

So I have a 9 month old Jack Russell Terrier who is the best things since sliced bread.

Unfortunately last week on Tuesday her knee popped out as she leapt out the back door and she cried out - this then happened again on Thursday when she came to run and jump on me so I called the vet. As expected it was Patellar Luxation in one hind and she went back in on Friday for X-Rays. She has been diagnosed as grade 2 and referred to the orthopaedic surgeon however our consultation isn't until September!!

I'm assuming we will just get the surgery to put a groove in the bone but I just feel a little bit in limbo that I have to wait two and a half months? She isn't totally lame, it comes and goes but I'm not supposed to let her do zoomies or really walk her.

Just wanted to know what other people experiences have been?

Thanks

My collie has this. The vet I was using at the time was not very helpful and I ended up getting dog seen by a physio who gave me lots of exercises to do with him. The exercises helped and although there was the odd occasion it occurred again, he is now 15 and has been fine for ages now.

My springer has terrible knees so I might not be the best person to respond ;)

Both Willow’s patellas luxate but her left is worse that right and this was the one she has surgery on. The surgery was successful but it still dislocates if she does too much so she’s not allowed to do too much.

Surgery is more successful I believe if the dislocation is a particular way and I can’t remember for the life of me which way is better now. I ‘think’ if the knee dislocates outwards it’s much harder to repair but I could be wrong.

When you see the specialist, make sure you write everything down because you will forget. Willow’s right knee isn’t brilliant but hasn’t required surgery as she is conservatively managed with her exercise now.

Good luck. Recovery from surgery is 8-10 weeks which seems like ages but it does pass quickly.
