My appaloosa has THE most pathetic mane you will ever see... I'd attach some photos but I have no idea how to do it on here, there may be some on my website that you could see it.

Its soooo thin, and as he was fully clipped over winter he had a rug w/neck so the bottom half of his mane is non-existent - it's starting to grow back a bit. But the top half and his forelock is still outrageously thin, I'm talking strands of hair. He's quite chunky so I think he'd look horribly cobby if he was hogged, plus it'd make him super itchy. But I just don't know what to do! When I compete I barely get four plaits out of that top half and it's driving me mad!

What can I do? Is there anything? Have any of you had pathetic manes and used anything magical that will make it better? haha

His tail is alright, but a bit bare at the top too...

Please help! :)

My mare had to have 5 inches amputated off her tail in October at which point the whole dock was shaved. It is growing back really well, I was recommended coconut oil by the vet (available on ebay for a couple of pounds). It is solid so I melt it with boiling water and cover her tail in that every so often. No idea if it is helping in grow quicker or thicker but it is definitely growing!!

Worth a go for a few quid!

I've used Eqyss Megatek Rebuilder on one horse who lost half her mane to rugs last year and it grew back really well. We also used it on a Sec A who had an in pulled but thin mane and it really helped thicken it up.
I have also heard that coconut oil is good but haven't tried it.

Has anyone heard of feeding seaweed for the coat and mane and tail?? I have a friesian that would benefit of some mane if there is some going spare :D:D tail is looking amazing thou have to keep trimming it :D

I understand that appaloosa's have a sparse mane and tails it is in their genes.

A good friend of mine has owned two and yes the mane and tail were/are sparse and thin.

But having said that my connie x Tb has a fetlock which consists of about two strands of hair - love your appy for what he is :-)

Wouldn't mane and tail extensions be such a good idea ? - Coblover63 may be able to help out ?

MTG !! You can buy it at Greenhawk! I have a thoroughbred with a pathetic tail and everyday I coat it with this stuff. I have seen a lot of improvement in the past month! It can also be used for manes, mud fever and basically anywhere with hair loss. It doesn't take long to see improvement if you put it on often ! Good luck :)

What's MTG and Greenhawk... Am I being stupid?

And OMG I think my orange spotty horse may look a tad ridiculous with all those bright colours!!! Or we need premade blonde/ginger plaits to roll up and clip/sew in for events :P

try these products they are very good http://www.tailgator.co.uk/

the other thing consider how often do you wash?? Thin manes when they get dirty/ greasy then to chaff more on rugs, where as as soft shiny mane has less frictions, so less likely to fall or get rubbed out.

You may not have it where you're located ! I thought Greenhawk was everywhere! Haha it is a big horse store!! And google mtg !

Our appy has a very thing mane and forelock, its forelock is so thin I can hardly plait it. I don't over brush it.

His tail however.....9 months on box rest and its now as thick as my welshes :D but he is ems so I think being on the metformin helped.
