Patrick update

Not sure if you remember but Patrick was having breathing problems and was initially prescribed an inhaler which he refused to have anything to do with so was then put on steroids. He was getting better slowly but unfortunately they have brought on an attack of laminitis. I had to have to emergency vet out last night as he went lame so fast (within about 1 hour) so now he is on 4 weeks at least box rest and I am trying to arrange xrays. This is his 2nd attack of lami in 2 years so am feeling very down today and would appreciate any hugs and healing vibes sent to him please.

Well its probably the best news we could have hoped for. There is no rotation and a good depth of foot between the pedal bone and sole so it looks like we have caught it very early. My vet thinks that as soon as the steroids are out of his system he should go sound again so we looking at about 4 - 6 weeks box rest then hopefully back into work. The bad news is that the allergy that set all this off has been identified as an allergy to sorrell grass and rye grass. I just knew it was something in the field that was setting him off. The only course open to us now is to have a vaccine made up especially for him to help him combat this. Apparently this is a fairly new technique that is not guaranteed to work so I need to think about this once we have got his feet sorted. He is also apparently allergic to cockroaches!!!

Patrick has got his gel packs on his feet now so is much happier and is tucked up in his stable eating his hay ration. Thank you for all your best wishes I am convinced they help!

Tell me about it - as far as I am aware there are no cockroaches in my stable or anywhere else, trust Patrick to come up with something novel!

Re: the allergies - cockroaches and rye grass?! Doesn't like to follow the crowd does he?! Sounds like the injection is the way to go, don't imagine there's many treatments on the market for that sort of thing

I think the vaccination is the way to go but it boils down to cost, if the insurance company is willing to fund it then great but if I have to do it, it really depends on how much and how successful it is likely to be. I know that sounds callous but this pony costs me a small fortune.
