Patterdales for agility?

Hi

I am considering getting a medium agility dog and rather like the look of a Patterdale, has anyone had one in agility? How are they? Also, are they good with children?

Hi, I don't have a patterdale but have just started agility with my JRT. She's extremely agile and able but not quite as obedient as the springers/ collies I know someone with a patterdale and it's a very bright dog but also extremely naughty!!

they are known for not being very good with other dogs and you may find that an issue in agiliy-usually good with people though including kids

if you’re going for a medium to be competitive look for a collie x something smaller or a very small collie - the medium classes are being saturated with them.

I know of a lady who does agility with hers and it's superb, it wipes the floor with the other dogs, being such bright dogs and having immense energy I think they are ideal for this. Socialised at a young age and you should have no problems.

I would think patterdales would be small rather than medium agility dogs. Most mediums are small collies, collie cross, sheltie or poodles.

The majority I meet are belligerent little sods and wouldn't be my pick either for agility or as a pet with young children. Assuming you don't want a medium collie the next most competitive dog you tend to see in medium is probably a working type cocker.

My only experience of Patterdales was not good, took on a two yr old rescue, from day one he had me tearing my hair out, was great on a longline, run him loose and he was a nightmare, no recall at all, was very quick to growl and show teeth, was not good with livestock or kids,, after he nearly took the nose off a young visitor, I had no qualms about him being pts, he went down fighting, perhaps I was just unlucky, but after having dogs all my life, he was the exception, give me a GSD anyday, if I was going into agility, I would choose a working cocker or a collie or a lighter x breed

We have one. He'd think agility was ridiculous and a complete waste of his time and energy. He prefers more nefarious hobbies
