Not me sadly - this time, I'm living vicariously through my dog :D

She's due 2 weeks tomorrow and is waddling around looking very fat and constantly in search of a new shady spot in which to be flat for an hour or so.

Looks like 4/5 pups on the scan (OH said it was 4, but I'm sure I saw 5) so shouldn't be too bad for a first litter.

I'm very very excited as I've never had a dog with puppies before so hoping I don't make too much of a hash of it :D

She's moving out of the 4 dog apartment she's currently in, into her very own maternity wing tonight (aka the horse box!) with a pal for a night or 2 so she doesn't get lonely.

Soooo.......any puppy tips?

(I know that this is about dogs, but I posted in here as its more about wanting to share it with you all:) so hopefully no one will feel the need to get all uppity and button push;) )

I was just about to go :D:D:D for you - personally, but now I shall go :D:D for the mummy-woof-to-be!
Hope the whelping goes smoothly. :)

My bedlington terrier had six puppies (planned :)) when I was 12 (13 years ago now), my parents had never bred dogs before and so we learnt everything from research, the vet and speaking to her breeder. If the vet says that her pregnancy is healthy and low-risk then she will most probably be fine, you just need to let her get on with it. She will probably deliver them in the middle of the night without much input from you - Maya had had one on my parents' bed before they woke up, we then transferred her to the whelping box next to their bed and she had the following three in quick succession. She then looked as if she was finished and so mum took her outside for a wee, she then ran back up the stairs and had two more :). The last one was huge and his sack broke as he came out, she sorted all the others out though. It was an amazing experience and nothing went wrong, there was a smaller one but we just made sure she got to the milk first and all was fine. After a few hours we weighed them and worked out a way of identifying them (white marks on their chests), then we weighed them every day for the first three weeks. Good luck and I hope your dog is as good a mummy as my Maya was :) xx

I know fools motto, hopefully itll be me next :D i wouldnt mind getting pregnant again soon, i definitely want another n id rather get it out if the way soon ha!

She's a working sheepdog. She's started her maternity leave now though, the others are taking up the slack :D

She's not been to the vet, hopefully we will get through it without them but I'll be straight on the phone if there are any problems.

The father is a fantastic working dog too so they should be great pups. So exciting!

Oh how exciting, we've got a brilliant working sheepdog that we would like to breed from soon but we have no experience at all when it comes to dog breeding (give me a sheep any day!) so looking forward to some detailed progress reports please! can I ask how old she is?

What are you bedding them on PD? Once they get a couple of weeks old and mobile, shavings are great as the wee sinks and you can pick the poop out. Certainly made things easier for us.

In terms of the labour best to have some cotton ready if you need to break any cords and tie them off, with our two litters the mum wasn't interested in chewing off for two pups so we intervened in the end, we think she was too tired. Also watch that she doesn't go too long between pups. Once she has started she will probably have them in half hour gaps, less than that or up to an hour. Over an hour and still visibly straining you might need a vet. Both times we had one stuck, lost one saved one. It was always the last pup and she was tired/they were big ******s.

I'm sure that you'll be fine, and so will she. Are the parents ISDS registered, and how are they bred?

Alec.

He is registered but she's not Alec. Not sure about his bloodlines but i will check. Hes a heck of a worker, catches ewes and works off a whistle 3 fields away :D
She's a brilliant worker too though, we got her from a hill farm and she's from working parents too. She's nearly 3 so hopefully a good age!
She's got the nicest nature too, and she's gotten very cuddly in the last week or so.

Thanks for the tips billie, your pups look lovely!
What do you put around their necks? Just wool? Hopefully ours will have some markings to go by but you never know.

I don't know what to bed them on. People say not to use straw because of mites, not to use shavings because of dust and not to use paper because of the ink
However unless I can teach them to levitate an inch or so above the ground I think I'll just use shavings on paper!

.......

INK? That's a new one!! :D

Just newspaper for the birth and when they're all clean and dry, carpet off-cuts for the first week or so, and then bare wooden boards.

Do let us know how she progresses.

Alec.

They are paper collars, like the ones they put on you at festivals. Helped us tell the blondes apart! You get a pack of them and just replace as they grow. You won't need them as you'll have lovely markings to go by I guess :)

Can't wait for pics!

Heart has calmed down now - thought you were crazy! Didn't you give birth about a month ago :cool: (I'm sure it's much longer than that but age gets us all.....)

Now feeling rather broody as lost my BC in January at 15.

No idea about puppies apart from kissing their tummies lots :o

I just met my new puppy :D

She is 3 days old and smaller than my hand :P purebred mongrel.

So now I am very very broody :D

Good luck to your girly patterdale :) x

Oh yeah nic nac, can't beet a puppy tummy, and some one should bottle the smell :), just lovely

Aww I agree, I love new puppy smell. And when their tails are too long for their bodies, and their little tummies and tiny sharp teeth... I want a puppy! Bedlington preferably :)

TOP TIP OF THE DAY:
Do NOT go on preloved and search for your favorite dog breed as there are hundreds of adverts and most are near you...
*sits on hands* :D

It is illegal to resize or reduce pics of puppy tummies!

Good luck Patterdale & Pattermum...can't wait for pics of the Patterpups:D At last a pregnancy box I can join in with!:D
