Pay monthy vet plans...worth it?

We have both of ours on a plan. It definitely works out cheaper for their flea and worm treatments. I know a lot of people don’t treat monthly, but as Luna has a habit of eating slugs and snails, lungworm is quite a risk. I actually saw a fox in our garden a couple of weeks ago, so am glad we flea treat. They also come horses regularly and are walked in the woods where I know there are deer, so wouldn’t want them picking up ticks either.
 
If you want to routinely vaccinate and treat for fleas and worms monthly, you can easily work out whether it works out favourably against the cost of just paying at the time of treatment. I think the question is 'Do you want to treat routinely' or would you rather evaluate before treating (worm counts etc)
 
I have the plan for our cats, as they are hunters and need to be deflead and wormed regularly, they also have annual vaccinations as they go to a cattery. I don't have anything for the dogs as they are treated for parasites very rarely , worms maybe twice a year, fleas and ticks maybe a couple of times in the summer months.
 
I have mine on a plan although I don’t flea/worm as often as they push you to (but I do it more than I would normally as they do eat what they catch if they do catch things and they spend a lot of time around other dogs) . The reduction in consultation and surgery cost/neutering etc have been a big help over the years and up to this pair they have both had injections due at the same time so just so not having to fork out for that at once has been a big help!

Then it’s probably worth it. I have my dog on it for similar reasons and I know I’d be rubbish at remembering to ask for it (I get s text that treatments are ready). Mine also includes a health check and nail clipping which isn’t something I can do myself on my dog (it’s truly awful how badly she screams!)
 
I get vet prescriptions and buy medicines from the internet. This works out much cheaper for me than my vet's plan which does not provide a reduction in vet fees. My favoured tick prevention (Seresto collars) is not one supplied under the plan either. I worked out the total cost of the plan over a year and compared it to my expenses over the same period and it was definitely more expensive for me.
 
To work it out you need to know what treatments you’d like to use, their ‘normal’ cost from the vets, written prescription charge and how long they’d put on a prescription for you. Plus the prices of the other things on the plan ie. vax. nail clips if you’re likely to use those, 6 month health check again I’d likely to use it. Ours for dogs over about 25kg generally do save money but it’s pretty tight below that unless you get nails done. It does spread the cost for those with tight cash flow even if not a saving.

Annoyingly health checks aren't included, the one she was on with the MiL included a full annual physical plus unlimited consultations with the vet as well as nurses but this one doesn't which is why I'm umming and ahhing over value.
 
you can buy flea and tick treatments online without a prescription-I use Advantage and Drontal (although I do buy a different wormer for Quarrie at the vets as frontal makes him sick) for cats and dogs (Droncit for the cats). Just buy and stick a reminder on your phone to treat if you want to do it regularly. I am not in a lungworm area though and one of mine can't have any of the ivermectin based drugs anyway.
 
I don’t do the monthly plans for the cats/dog as I generally don’t worm & flea monthly - I just buy my treatments off internet pharmacy and probably treat every 3 months unless I can see I have a problem.

I have got them all signed up to the vaccination for life scheme at Pets at home. £99 one off fee for an annual heath check and vaccination, for life!

The horses however I have signed up to the monthly vet plan, it’s excellent value - £11.99/month for annual vacc, teeth under sedation, eyes/heart/lung/soundness check, 4 worm counts, 1 tapeworm saliva test, annual wormer. 10% off all other vets fees

Blimey! That's good going. And your vet practice is........?? Think mine need a kick up the derriere to come anywhere near that/match that. :(

Free visit zone day and tbh you are laughing. I do seem to give them plenty of properly paid work too though!

Ha, they're my vet, I shall look into it! Though I do like my dentist which reduces value a bit.

So do I(dentist) but I’m going to get them done 6 monthly anyway, so I get a proper dentist annually and then consider the vet a quick check/rasp in between [and I make use of the included sedation for a decent mane pull or anything else!]
 
Vallin, how are you getting on with Daisy? Is Doggy Day care working out alright? (sorry if I have missed updates but I don't remember seeing anything since you were discussing options.

Expensive! It's the same day care we've used before and she absolutely loves it is just not viable indefinitely due to cost and added commute time for OH. We have joined a local canicross group which is great for her and us and I'm hoping once we know people better there might be someone that wants to run her one day a week but we're a bit out of the way for most so we'll just have to wait and see. We've worked out we can manage until Easter and then will have to have a serious look at borrow my doggy or something similar :-/ Trying to work out what other costs we can keep down but she's doing really well on MWH so don't really want to switch that, hence looking a vet savings.
