Paying for a ready made pet

I have just come across an add on Pets4Homes.

They are selling a 'pet trained' dog for just shy of £4000.

Is there really a market where people will pay a very high price for a dog who is a well established pet?

They claim to have a long waiting list, which does beg the question of why they are posting on Pets4Homes..
 
Lots of people buy pre-trained dogs, it's bigger in gundog and sport/protection dog sectors but if you think about it all assistance dogs and a lot of service dogs are pre-trained before they go to their new homes, I don't find it that unusual. I know people (not the firm linked) that do a roaring trade in pre-trained labs and cockers for pet homes. They are very good dog trainers.

Possibly from small rescues without any scruples, or directly rehomed from owners that no longer want them? Could have been pretty much anywhere really. I have mixed feelings on this, I would be asking why a private home would want a dog someone else has done all the early bonding with and the training. Gun dogs, protection and support dogs I can understand, pets for private homes not too sure this is ideal.

Ideally not from these guys, what they are hoping to achieve in just 4-6 weeks for that price tag I'm not sure. They are also advertising the services of a very mediocre stud dog which had me a bit eye-rolly.

But yes it's a thing, the market is as CC's list plus I'd also add ultra high net worth clients who are willing to pay £££ to instantly obtain a dog that looks and acts a certain way. £4k is pocket change compared to some.

Not saying it is right or wrong, but some people just don't know how to/aren't very good at/don't have enough time to be training dogs and have the money to pay someone else to do it.

Yep, an acquaintance took a load of very beautiful black and red show dogs to the UAE over ten years ago, because that's what the client wanted to see running round his compound when he looked out of his windows, and had to train his staff how to handle them. Didn't take a job like that again.

Yeah I believe it, I have a family member that works with UHNWI that sends me job adverts from the industry and they are mad. 50-80k plus accommodation for a live-in dog walker/handler but you're at the client's beck and call at all hours, expected to fly out a short notice etc. and I've heard some stories.

I don't mind the puppy bit, I seem to have a good track record with the formulaic bits like toilet training, but I can see how I might choose to opt out of 6-18 months if I had the cash. 😐
 
My hairdresser back in Essex bought2 pets trained labs. She CBA with puppy hassle and was happy to write a cheque for a house and heel trained dog.
However my Grandpa always spent a fortune on pre trained gun dogs and had ruined them in a season, so it’s not an idiot proof concept.
Is Duke a boy or a girl? Ad seems undecided! 😁
 
Honestly if I had the money yes I would. With my sisters balance issues we can’t risk any dog that will be around feet, jump up or generally be bouncy or bolshy around her. A support dog would be wonderful for her but she would never qualify for one.
 
They have a long waiting list of clients yet have six dogs on that board - a 7 month old, three 1 year olds and two 2 year olds. All about to undergo 'bespoke' training on how to sit.

But don't worry, all of them pick up commands very fast. Three of them even love to retrieve a ball or dummy. Guess the other three don't then...
 
I can see why it might be helpful if the owner has small kids/is infirm or otherwise not able to do the drudgery of the early days. Personally, even though she literally nearly drove me to drink I feel like my dog and I have a really solid bond from all the work that went into her.

I think on balance I'd rather take a well bred and raised puppy and do the training myself*

I'd also worry about the training methods potentially used by some of these businesses. And I can't imagine spending 4k on a pet dog.

*but when the time comes I'll probably get another hooligan like the first.
 
My bil is somewhat horrified at the work required to train a puppy. Apparently he has a lively one! We had his first puppy for the first two weeks and did lead walking (in the garden), established toilet training, did firework training, got him used to a collar, so now bil is bemoaning the lack of all these things. We had a huge advantage with our two leading the way, obviously, it wasn’t all us. I can definitely see the advantage of an older/part trained dog. Part trained springers go for silly money.

My paternal grandmother worked for the headmistress of Rodean who had Keeshonds, sent to the police for training. They were apparently ‘at a word’. Sometimes that might be nice, but I like a dog with personality, not a robot.

My ex-husband used to - when he was really drunk and got up in the middle of the night to go but didn't quite find the bathroom... 😩

It was such a regular problem that it was listed (along with many other problems) as part of his unreasonable behaviour on my petition for divorce 😂
 
My partner has never pissed anywhere weird from intoxication.

However, literally a few weeks ago he was out drinking. Came home quite drunk. Went to bed.

I was asleep and I heard a water noise. Opened my eyes to see him stood in the corner of the room. I put two and two together and came up with five 🤭😅

Started screaming at him, thinking he was pissing in the corner of the room. Literally 'WHAT THE F*** DO YOU THINK YOU'RE DOING!? WHAT THE F*** IS WRONG WITH YOU!?'

Turns out the water noise was because he had taken a sip of his drink and he was on his way to the bathroom so for the snapshot that I opened my eyes, he appeared to be still.

Poor bloke was literally picking stuff up off the floor to show me it was dry and managed to remain very composed despite my epic outburst of rage 😳😳

Hahaha!

My ex-husband, shortly after we got together, went to the corner of my bedroom one night and DID wee... straight into the bag full of his clothes that he'd brought with him for the weekend because he lived a few hundred miles away! 😂 😂 😂

(I really should have paid more heed to his early behaviour ... :rolleyes:)
