hi . having had some health issues my horses have done nothing for ages and i need to pay someone to ride them . the problem is that if im paying them isnt that a kind of employment which i need insurance for ? having looked at all the employers liability insurances they dont really apply and are very expensive . is there any way round this or do i give up.

thanks for any ideas in advance.

I dont know about insurances etc.. but Im sure many people would ride for free! I know I would, just thought it might save you money?
Sorry if this is totally irrelevent

Whereabouts are you?

have you thought about rather than paying someone to ride about looking for a sharer/loan person. you still have everything on your own terms but they pay to look after your horse?

sorry to hear about your health issues

ohh also i remember seeing a notice in my local tackshop saying rider wanted. within 3days it wewas gone! could be a possiblilty

it just depends on the level of work you want your horse to do. i presume its easier to find a happy hacker/light schooler for free rather than top level

hmm i hope that mkae sense hehe

When I was really ill,I was lucky and found a friend of a friend who'd stopped riding a couple of years before, as she studying, and couldn;t afford it. She's had her own pony and missed riding like mad. She was more than grateful to exercise mine. I was still able to do the basic care, and she got the fun! plus, the insurance wasn't affected as she was riding with my permission, and no payment from either party.
Hopefully you will find someone, and can get fully well so you can enjoy your horse yourself again. Took me 3 years or so, and in the meantime the girl riding had alot of fun, but stopped when her exams were taking place, coinciding with myself being well enough to start riding again.

Yes if you pay someone to ride your horses you are effectively employing them and any standard PL cover on your horses would not cover them. Check your insurance to be sure but I would advise not to pay someone unless they have their own PL insurance.

Can you not loan them on a short term basis instead?

thank you. i did look for sharers or riders in the summer but i didnt get any replies. i now feel that as they havnt done anything for so long that i couldnt expect anyone to ride them without reward .

if you are paying a freelance rider/groom to exercise then they should have their own public liability and 3c liability insurance cover, same as if you paid a livery yard to exercise!! once someone does this 'for financial gain' the liability goal posts move a few miles!!!! and your own horse policy wont cover them and be nul and void.

I ride for a few people and am covered by my insurance not theirs as i think owners already pay registration n entery fees without being expected to pay for more insurance

I ride for other people and it's my responsiblity to have my own insurance if I want to be able to claim for earnings lost as a result of an injury etc. I'm not sure what would happen if your horse injured someone and they tried to sue you as a result so guess you would need to check that out, however most professional riders wouldn't put themselves in a dangerous situation and I think when you ride professionally you should have enough experience to avoid those situations and if something happens anyway you accept that that's horses for you and they're unpredictable even if they're 30yrs old and so it's up to you as a rider to have your own insurance if you're concerned

I agree! If you pay somebody on a freelance basis to ride your horse, then the insurance is their own responsibility. Some may be insured, others may choose not to. You still need to have your own horse insured though. As a freelance instructor, I would have to pay additional premium if I were to ride, school, teach on any horse. Sad, but sign of the times

thanks for all the replies. yep i can clearly see now that there would be a problem with someone who wasnt a " professional " riding for pay. all fine until something goes wrong. so if i offer Free riding does that relinquish me from being responsible for the rider ? my horses are well behaved normally , but they are horses

. i wouldnt want to loan them out as i am a bit possesive about them

It depends on what level the horse is working at.If its a lowish level it would be worth advertising locally and you may get someone happy to do it for free

From another view, you look at the potential rider itself. Not everyone can afford a horse, and not even to share one, so by adding money into the equaition you may either make the advert less possible for people.
I have basic insurance like most riders but, if I started riding someone elses horse I would up the insurance and it would be my responsiblity - not the owners, IMO.

Where are you based, i've been looking for someone wanting a rider/helping hand for a while now?
