Just seen what looks like a nice box for sale on FB. But it says she has no idea of payload so don’t ask but she’s had an 18hh horse in it. Am I the only person who wants to know the payload for my 20k or are buyers still not bothered about being overweight

I was looking at one earlier. A 3.5 ton "easily upgraded" which sleeps 4, takes 2 large horses roof raised to take an even larger horse and loads of extras. This would be fine if the box was upgraded but surely if MOT'd as 3.5 to that's all it can legally take?
Another promising looking one and seller gave figures indicating a 400kg payload. She must surely have that wrong, you couldn't carry a Sec A and a driver with that payload, not if you wanted to put any fuel in.

These ads drive me crazy. I don't know how you cannot be aware of payloads and the legalities of it if you are travelling horses. I know someone who has uprated their 3.5 tonne to 3.9 but has not changed the registration with the DVLA or the insurance. Driving around like that would scare me to death.

So many people seem to think that if you can fit two horses in, then it will take two horses. Crazy.

If you've got a 3.5t you can't take 2 reasonably sized horses. You need 5.5t to have any sort of reasonable payload. Anything less and you are setting up for trouble unless you are only travelling ponies.

Rather hijacking OP's thread but I'll be after a box next year and I go round and round and round. I only have ponies, but big ones, so I could just about take the Dales and a Connie in a 3.5 ton if daughter took her car with tack etc. But if I keep the Dales foal then I'd be overloaded with him and his mother, and I also have a steep, narrow drive into the yard and won't get a large box in.

If you want a 3.5t box that will carry 2 500kg horses you need one that is striped down to the very basics. Box, basic seats, nothing in the back at all. No frills or niceties. Even then you will probably go over.

I know :( But a 3.5 ton upgraded to 3.9 ton might just be enough.

I've been looking at maybe getting a Renault master van conversion, enquired about one last week that had over 1500kg payload in the ad. I figured they'd made a typo or got confused with pre-conversion payload, so I asked what is the post-conversion payload and they said payload was in the ad, just over 1500kg. I replied that most boxes of that type are 1000-1200kg. No response back. They'd said they had someone viewing on Saturday and it's now marked as sold so guessing they bought it, hopefully they take it to a weighbridge

Mine was sold to me as having a 1325kg payload.
I was sceptical but it was a VERY basic build so I figured it might be up towards that figure even if not quite there.
I didn’t need a big payload myself so wasn’t too worried but did take it to be weighed so I knew the actual figure - my actual payload was closer to 1050kg ? Absolutely fine for me but could have been problematic for someone else.
