Paypal on eBay - what's the point?

I've got some items to sell and am pondering whether to continue using Paypal?

As time has gone on I've realised that Paypal isn't the safe way of getting payment as I first thought, for instance:

. if a person hasn't lodged their credit/debit card details it payment takes about a month for the money to clear

. if a person has lodged their details, the payment can still bounce if they don't have the funds - but in the meantime Paypal has told the seller that the buyer has paid so you send them the goods

. the buyer can report that there's something wrong with the item and Paypal seems to find in favour of the buyer, and refund them, at the expense of the seller.

.You get charged a percentage of the sale price for getting payment via this channel

. And then you get charged again to withdraw the funds

So what is the point?

Personally I think the safest method of payment is a Postal Order as personal cheques can take forever to clear - well you never know whether they have as the drawee Bank can stop them at any time.

And Bankers Drafts seem dodgy too - as you never know whether they're real.

I suppose really that should be the case with Postal Orders too now they look exactly like cheques!

It seems a case of 'seller beware'

As a buyer & seller I prefer Paypal. Buyers often don't want to pay 'extra' for a postal order, but as a seller I like them, but as I live rurally, it's hassle to drive specially to the PO to cash it.

I like the convenience of just pressing a few buttons so that I can pay straightaway for an item. Also, for me, Paypal is a 'pot' that gets filled by funds from items I sell & then spent on loverly horsey items!

That's the way I use my Paypal. I sell things and then use the funds to buy other things. There are lots of websites now that accept Paypal, not just eBay. I have only once had a problem with funds not coming to my account straight away but I always check he have cleared I before post the item.

I'd be really peed off if I bought from you using my card and you didn't despatch right away!

Plus if it went wrong PayPal will set the baliffs on you

PayPal has seller protection, and I think OP may have had a one off bad experience with a combination funded payment. PayPal should have stepped in and helped if they had cleared the item for despatch and it was sent recorded.

I wouldn't even consider buying anything on eBay without using PayPal. That is the number 1 criterion I have for buying from eBay.

Don't bank on postal orders being safe....i paid for something with one and never recieved goods and they denied recieveing payment......I will NEVER EVER use e-bay again.

Ooh yes, I forgot about that side of things. You can't stop a Postal Order like you can a personal cheque
