Has anyone here done horse riding for their PE GCSE? I was thinking of making a video but I don't know what exactly to include in it and I can't find it on the website. (e.g. do I have to jump a 2ft6/3ft course? or a dressage test? do I have to include tacking up/lunging?) any help would be massively appreciated!! :)

For your coursework you generally do make a video - for the exam I believe a teacher comes out to video and assess, and then sends it off to the exam board for proper marking (as most school teachers aren't horsey). Your teacher should have a copy of the syllabus that needs to be followed - but in the meantime look up 'horse riding gcse' on youtube and you'll find masses of ideas! Hope that helps

I did it for GCSE about 6 years ago.
I filmed riding around in a sandschool. My PE teacher was very non horsey, but read the syllabus and told us what she wanted to see. 3 paces, circles, halt, mounting and dismounting.
So I filmed a small dressage type sequence about 10 mins long.
She couldnt be bothered to watch the whole thing and said i could have full marks after 2 mins of watching!

I wish you well but struggle to see the purpose of a GCSE in riding (or a lot of other non-academic subjects or the matter).

It's just the practical part of the subject, there is still a lot of theory in GCSE PE - which is probably quite useful to learn as covers health and fitness (and I think even some aspects of psychology, sports related) as well as the biological side of things. OH is a PE teacher and some of what is taught is quite scientific.

Its not a GCSE in riding, it's in PE. Which (from my Scottish understanding) the OP could then use towards any sports science degree.

Hi does anyone know if you can take GCSE PE horse riding at any school? I didn't want to do PE before I heard you could take horse riding?

Hi Freyfrey, when I did PE GCSE at school it was one of my chosen sports. I also did netball and hockey from what I can remember but riding did just involve me making a video of me riding. It doesn't get you out of any school time, it all has to be done externally obviously. I videoed myself WTC on the flat, round a course of about 1m as that's what I was doing on my horse at the time and then stuck some XC on the end. I got full marks.

My daughter did it at school, the teacher came out to watch her ride a dressage test at our yard. I also videoed the test for her coursework. This was sent along with the coursework to me moderated by the exam board. To be fair the teacher that came out to assess her from the school knew absolutely nothing about riding, dressage or horses. I think she had researched some of the subject beforehand but I personally found it odd that someone with no knowledge could come and assess. However at the end of the day both the initial assessment and moderation of the riding aspect of the course received top marks. My daughter also covered other sports as part of the GCSE.

Usually students have to have four sports to show for GCSE. They can be any sports, including things like surfing, hiking, kayaking and horse riding, etc. You don't get get a GCSE in horse riding - it's PE. The theory aspect is very demanding, with anatomy and physiology, health and nutrition, sports psychology etc. It's a tough GCSE.

^^^It's surprisingly tough. Riding can be one of 4 sports that you will be assessed on. The practical elements are completed earlier in the course, with the final run in being the purely theoretical.

Both student sons did it, as it was compulsory at their school. They are both sporty, but despite mostly doing the harder academic subjects, they found that PE wasn't a shoo in. Indeed, it took up valuable time away from proper subjects (school had a fixation about entering students for silly numbers of GCSEs).

I did it with Edexcel and had to choose between sj, xc or dressage. Each category was given specific skills. I did sj and had to show walk trot and canter, with and without stirrups and show I could ride with one hand/show an independent seat, be able to perform a turn on the quarters from walk, rein back etc and jump a 3ft track I had designed myself. Had it filmed and had to show results for the year prior (just little local shows) as coursework and be able to answer a few questions on stable management and had to show relevant things such as being able to put a headcollar on, tack up and warm up and cool down. That was 7 years ago. Had an AI instructor come out and assess me and mark me against the criteria and then gave it all to my teacher.

Found your marking criteria but it's really not very clear what they want with horse riding? I'd ask your teacher for a specification. That's what I did and then just made sure I could do everything required for the 10. Literally just showed the examiners what they wanted to see on video!
