So, after a lot of deliberating (read: getting round to it, not fancying it but feeling obliged) I tacked up agoraphobic dumblood and decided to head for the dreaded field straight away - normally I would hack round the fen (about 1,5 mile) to warm up first, but time was getting on. I walked down the lane, got to the gate, he stopped and I braved it - dropped the contact completely and kicked on, he lurched forward on to where normally the contact/bit would be, found nothing, dived on his nose, had a bit of a think about it and walked on...
I decided to go round the field once and go back home, didn't pick any contact at all and trotted around - he was awful
giraffe like, running and shuffling and very, very tense, BUT... he stopped only once, only couple of steps backwards and moved on from my leg. I have even managed about 50 yards of canter, admittedly, he wasn't taking me anywhere, the stride was more upwards than forwards and not for one second did he relax, but it is progress nonetheless
I have to say I'm not enjoying it very much to ride on a buckle in such a vast space
, but I suppose it can only get better.
So, chocolate is on me tonight
