Hello, my horse fractured her pedal bone 2 months ago and we are still in the box rest stages with the vet coming out in the next week or two to rescan and assess the fracture line and lameness. The fracture is across the pedal bone wing and goes about 3/4 way through towards the coffin joint. It is affecting the joint and there is the possibility for her to develop arthritis (this will also be assessed). She has been on complete box rest with a heart bar shoe with extra clips for the 2 months but I am wondering what the rehab looks like regarding turnout. She will need to be sedated when coming out her stable for pretty much anything as she is showing signs of exploding when she is tied up just outside her stable (while mucking out etc). The rest of the small yard are now out 24/7 so she is in by her self now (not a big issue for her) but have people built up the turnout time or resumed turnout in a smaller pen etc. my plan was to make a stable sized/15ftx15ft pen in her field so limit walking etc. has anyone got any experience with this?

Mine fractured the side of his toe on the pedal bone really rare apparently, he had 12 weeks in a cast with a heart bar they re xrayed and it had healed so he was allowed out.
I keep my horses at home and have 2 so I just sedated him with sedalin and put him in his regular field with my other horse, I started of with a few hours first and he was fine then gradually increased it, I only needed to sedate him for about the first 5 days he was then on overnight turnout after about 3 weeks.

I am currently doing a ridden rehab he was so stiff from the box rest his under the physio and she has given me a plan to do, his 18 now and his lost a lot of top line and muscle with the lack of movement so its going to take time but hopefully we will eventually get there.

I have seen one. After box rest she was in a 15x15 pen in the field for several weeks and recovered completely.

I had a pony who fractured the wing of his pedal bone, he was box rested for 6 months initially with an aluminium plate over his whole hoof then a heart bar. When he was eventually allowed out we sedated and he went to a friends yard nearby where there was a school and he was walked out for a couple of weeks. When he came home we continued to bring him slowly back into work and turned him out as normal with sedation on the first day but then he was left out 24/7 so no excitement or charging around. We did not jump him for the first year back in work just concentrated on hacking and dressage. His fracture was when he was 9 and it never gave him any further trouble. He lived to be 30

No experience with pedal bone fracture but after a bad tendon injury my horse went into a 12 x 12 pen made with electric fence (high poles) on grass. He was hungry when he first went into it and another horse was penned very close by. It was enlarged daily by a very small amount so he didn't get excited. All went well and made a good recovery. Good luck.

If they will stay in a tiny pen field and be calm its a better option but mine won't settle in a pen, he will just constantly buck and rear in it and generally be an idiot so I just turn him out as normal he doesn't run about at all, his happier with my other horse eating grass it's far less stressful ?
