hi all i have another thread under intermitant lameness cause that is what it was for 12 weeks so i am goint to start from the begining for people that have it happening now or god forbid have it happen to them in the future. here we go on dec 3rd 2012 my horse came in lame that lame we couldn't tell what leg hind or front, any way it was front right, got vet out next day as could'nt find anything 6/10 lame in walk suspected break in foot so went for xrays that day,came up nothing, vets thought soft tissue damage rest 4 bute a day could lead out to grass, all went well for 4 days then she started to feel better and play up so stopped bute and was about 2/10 lame in trott by day 7 was ok till end of dec/ begining of jan went lame again cripple again, so restricted again but gut feeling not tissue but hey i'm no vet, any way this carried on until feb she went two and a half weeks sound even trotted up for vet boarder line 1/10 to sound then she started to jump fences and again lame. so took her for more x rays just to satisfy myself that there had been no boney changes so we went had trott up another nerve block came up sound no pain to hoof testers vets still thought soft tissue but let me have the 2 xrays i asked for after all it is my money horse not insured. well it did show a fracture forward in the pedal bone only to be seen on one xray going thru the back of the foot none of the others shows it it had 5 done in dec, any way box rest but allowed in a small pen during day as even vets have seen her antics and she is a big girl,had a heart bar shoe on with clips either side of the fracture, now been 3 weeks tomorrow that she has had shoe on and she is walkin sound, back to vets on may 14th for more xrays they said they will be able to tell me if i will get to arenauk for sept show, this is the story so far will update more later or as it happens, i hope this helps someone who may be experiencing the same degree of intermitant lameness sorry about spelling punctuation

Well sentences and punctuation capitals not always applied but hey I understood, and I cannot criticise. Anyway OP did apologise for it.

Op I got the jist of it. (3rd Dec 2012) sad day I lost my mare that day. Hope he improves OP
 
sorry for those not understanding, punctuation spelling and grammer not my best subject , just trying to help someone who is or may become in my boat,keeping horses in pens or stabled is a right pain, to top it off i now got to take my sons horse to vets for a scan on tendon on tues. The horse with fracture still walking sound to and from spare stable or pen x
 
I understood it and thanks for pointing out this as something to consider in similar circumstances. I wish you and your horse well. x
 
just an update for anyone else who want to compare notes, we are into week 4 now and i must admit due to weather she has been in the stable more this last week and only been in the pen twice, she seems ok in walk , had a few lame steps on monday (today is weds) and heat in her foot on monday but cold again by tuesday, i must admit i did panic and phoned the vet who said that heat coming and going was normal.The foot was cold again today and sound in walk to her day stable ok today but she does still feel pain in her foot when turning in the stable on it. oh well only 8 more weeks till the next x ray, would love to hear from anyone else in same situation so i could compare notes x
 
well it's 5 weeks today since she saw the vet, and all is going well i think ,she turns around in either direction without limping or favoring either foot, she has only been in her pen twice this week just for a roll and stretch for about 10 mins each time, the weather has been awful, i don't know if this box rest is worse for me or her , i hate seeing her getting depressed , but i know this is for her own good so the weather being bad is a god send for me in any case. and her foot has stayed cold all week no heat at all, thats about it for this week x
 
week 6, good signs at the mo, walking with heel down first and when turning on the fractured foot she shows no signs of lameness or pain, we have had a few rearing fits of temper when going either to her pen or spare stable but she is a horse and wants out. she is only going in her pen for 20 mins each morning to have a roll and see the world from a different angle,oh well thats it for this week, only another 6 weeks till her next lot of xrays half way there whoop whoop x
 
we are just finishing our 12th week of box rest for a broken pedal bone..3 weeks to go before any possible turnout and then only into a very small pen..so now prying the grass starts growing soon..
 
well week 7, not such a good week due to acrobatics in a small pen {and it is amazing what they can do in a small pen} my horse is now in her stable 24/7. apart from trying to kill me getting her to her pen the horse is ok, i did think she was getting used to the stable pen routine but not so she is getting worse, so much so i am getting the vets to come to me with the xray machine as i don't think i could get her on and off the lorry safely. also i am worried that if the fracture has not healed the undue stress of loading and unloading and travelling wont do her any good, The vets are coming out on the 30th or april which is two weeks earlier than i would have liked.But i have to fit in with when the machine is not being used at the clinic and when my vet can do it. as the fracture only shows up in one position, so if i don't post between now and when i get the results it will be because there is nothing to report or my horse has killed me !. i do hope this thread and weekly update is helping some one if not for a fracture surely someone else must have a horse who doesn't fair too well on box rest, x
 
week 8, well 9 days in stable only going from day stable to night stable. had shoe changed last friday , and she seemed a bit sore for a few strides back to the stable but sound again within a few steps today she is well up for anything and was a total cow on lead rein rearing etc, tried to ****** off and nearly fell over but she is ok and seems sound. only problem is vet now wants shoe off for xray in two weeks but told me before that xray could be done with shoe on, and they want to do trot up so it lameness has improved and xrays shoe healing process she will be allowed back in to pen provided she can keep all feet on the floor{ no chance of that}. so now i don't know what to do if i take shoe off and trot her up she wont have support and i am worried she could undo all the repair that has occurred .and then what do i do about beginning exercise, i cant even lead the bloody horse from one stable into the next one without her exploding so how the hell can i get her to stay in a pen for an hour a day without doing one? this is a cause for concern my horse is now dangerous to handle ,god help the trot up !oh well 2 weeks to get my head around this unless anyone has any suggestions to overcome these issues ???
 
We are almost at the end of stage one of recovery..and allowed out next week for a further 12 weeks of pen rest..getting him out is going to be the hardest part..good luck with your x-ray's..we were told not to bother having any as they wont show anything new as pedal bone does not heal in the same way as other bones and will always show up on x-ray for life..
I have to say reading your thread I'm quite surprised how different vets treat this injury as we were told not to turn out or even bring out of the stable for 12 weeks..
 
hi baily , i know what you mean as in vets advice,as yours had a cast and mine didn't, i think ours our being treated differently because mine doesn't go into the joint, my vet said that on further xrays they can tell if healing is taking place, ie if the fracture is fuzzy or if the crack is larger but with a smooth edge its good if is ragged or bone displaced its bad and that the fracture can show for up to 2 years,he also said they go on clinical signs as in lameness he is looking for her to be improved but not sound,{ i think he may be in for a shock}i think she is almost sound but cant tell as havent trotted up but she is defo sound in walk and can turn etc without any pain and can prat about. she was allowed in a pen provided she didn't mess about ,tha'ts why i stopped putting her in there cause she scared the hell out of me with what she was doing in a 12foot x12 foot pen !we should be trying the pen thing again if x rays are good and trot up,that's the bit i am not looking forward to, my horse was well behaved and now i must admit she scares me even to lead her cause her feet don't tend to stay on the ground, please let me know how you get on with the pen thing and how big you make it and if you have to do a trot up for soundness its nice to be able to compare. oh by the way the vet wants to do x rays every 2-3 months x
 
well week 9 and looking good i think, i have been able to put her back in her pen for 3/4 of an hour sun, mon and today with no major tantrums and the leading has been good only a slight buck today and 2 strides of trot, i know you can't tell alot with only two strides but it looked ok to me and given me hope for when the vet comes next week,she has finally accepted the box rest at long last and is in a better mood with me thank god, i did miss my baby girls love lol, well thats all will let you know the outcome next week i will have everything crossed x
 
hi all good news the vet came out today and we had a trot up sound intermittently 1/10 lame. he thinks she would have been sound on an even surface which my drive isnt that, my horse is to have a larger pen increasing over the next 6 weeks to 10 by 30 meters then over the 6 week after that to 20 by 60. she is allowed to be ridden in walk for the next 3 months starting with 10 mins leading up to 30 mins in 1st month then increasing to an hour in the 2nd month then increasing to an hour and a half over the 3rd month then we can start trot, re xray in sept which he hopes we can go back to normal work. the walking work is not going to speed up or aid healing he sais it will help keep her sane whilst still on restriction and to stop her getting bored and hopefully as her little paddock increases with her work load stop her from being a prat in the field . ( and boy he has seen her antics) overall he is more than pleased with her and sais if she starts to go lame or sore to ease off a little but to carry on, he also said about the shoeing which i ws having done every 5 weeks to let them go 8-10 weeks depending on cleanches and becoming loose so thats a bonus . well thats about it i do hope i have helped someone or this is going to help somebody in the future and i hope this will answer any questions anyone may have along their journey but please remember their are 6 types of pedal bone fractures and this is what has happened for a wing fracture Not affecting the joint thankyou for reading xx
