how do we accurately measure the degrees of bone rotation, also what is acceptable for a good prognosis.and when is it to late ? small 11hh welsh pony 15yo. suffering.

When the Vet Xrays your horse's feet, they place a nail on the hoof wall at the front and a drawing pin (if they are sure it will not go in too far if there is suspicion of rotation) on the sole (cannot remember the exact position) and they will stand the foot on a block of wood.

They will then do measurements from that

My horse had 10 degrees of rotation and is back being ridden now, however I understand that 15 degrees is not good, but I am sure does not always mean bad news .... my horse in question is in my siggie

he has been x-rayed every 6 -8 weeks never had pins or nails to determine rotation degree. just visually looking for a parrallel angle with the hoof. now after 15months of cutting back and reshaping the foot he is just as crippled (on all4) nowas he was when we started although at different stages througout the year we thought we were winning ,lamenitis with rotation and a metabolic abnormality, now its crunch time this week the vets x3 say its the end of the road.but as all caring owners is there no other avenue ?

I don't really know what to say as I only know what happened in my case, but I do know that the nails and pins technique is normal.

I presume that your horse must have some other issues going on as if you have seen 3 Vets there must be a wealth of experience there

Have you spoken to the Laminitis Trust? It is a £1 a minute premium rate line but they are very good and obviously have even more wealth of experience!

Here they are Laminitis Trust
