I've not had first hand experience of laminitis (thank god and reaches out to touch wood quickly) but a pony near me has it. The pedal bone has dropped and come through the sole apparently. I'm wondering what success rate people have had with bringing ponies back into work after this or if they make it through at all.

Presumably the vet must think there is some hope of recovery & keeping it comfortable in the meantime, but often when this stage s reached the horse or pony is pts as the humane option.

Lots of info on this excellent site.

Have a read through some of the case studies

If her vet is giving her a chance then the first thing to get done is xrays and a realigning trim. This will relieve some of the pressure immediately.
Finding and removing the cause of the laminitis ie EMD or Cushing's (in most cases), and correct trimming will give you the best chance

I knew of a horse some years back that had the pedal bone go through the sole and for 5 days the horse hardly stood up and looked in agony, I think the vet had advised a procedure where they cut part of the hoof wall to relieve pressure, he was pts on the 5th day and I personally would not have had him suffer for those 5 days, I think once the pedal bone goes that far the only option I would consider is pts as it must be the most excruciating pain.

I've not known of anything with the pedal bone through the foot having a successful recovery. It was unrealsitic to even attempt treatment, PTS every time.

Even treating those with 'just' a severe rotation was carefully deliberated and those that did have tx were usually in the clinic for months.
