My 5 year old gelding has just been diagnosed with pedal osteitis. He has just been shod with Imprint Shoes and has to have four weeks box rest - oh joy!

Does anybody have any experience with pedal osteitis - is there anything else I could/should do for him. Will he become sound or is the outlook bleak??

He is on Newmarket hoof supplement.

many thanks

A friend had experience with it but it was caught very late on and isn't the best story. The best thing you can do for him is a huge shavings bed, that will support his feet and keep him nice and comfy. Other than that it's waiting game, has he had xrays taken yet?

thanks for your reply.

yes, he had xrays two weeks ago. Hopefully we have caught it in time but its going to be a long journey yet. Better make sure I stock up on shavings!!!

Well, i have just spent all day at the BEVA veterinary conference in Liverpool and they covered foot pain, diagnosis, treatments etc but sadly I don't think they covered that although i think I would say, don't give up. The horse is only young so changes can still occur.

I would do some research but I think it may be relieved by treating the underlying cause and isn't necessarily the end of the world.

Our connemara mare has had this for a quite a few years now. She's 18 now and still jumps, hunts, local dressage and hunter class showing. She is still VERY lively and it doesnt seem to bother her a bit. No special supplements just rubber matting and shavings. Hers is fairly mild though.
The only thing that has changed is she used to do BSJA but no longer jumps higher than 2'9 in the summer due to the ground.
She mainly goes for rides across fields or schools in the field in the summer and then comes out to play at shows in the winter when its soft. This fits brilliantly for me as my 26 year young arab cross does showing in the summer and relaxs in the winter!

Hi,
Also get in touch with a homeopath who can prescribe some remedies for you. Not everyone keen on homeopaths but I have had only good experiences with them.
Good Luck and Best wishes
