Peeing in house vs cocking the leg in house!

Okay, having read the thread about rehoming process (didn't read the article) and saw some comments about dogs being messy buggers and if you can't handle peeing in the house that one perhaps ought to consider a teddy instead.

I agree with that in part. My dogs have all peed and pooped in my house at one point or another. And as they got older and their bladders weakend or they became senile, they did it then too. I'm not squeamish about stuff like that. However, I *do* draw the line at leg cocking!!!!

I got Merlin from a breeder who kept him until he was 10 months (she'd had him neutered as he had retained a testicle - and then want to make sure he went to the right home). However, she also co-owned his litter brother who was out showing with someone else - the person who kept the brother had offered me that one to start with - but what put me off him IMMEDIATELY was that he came in to my shop and just casually cocked his leg like three times! I just feel leg cocking is really hard to stop once they start. I know that my shop is much more likely to induce that from an entire male - but what do you guys think - would a dog that insist on cocking his leg annoy you?
 
That would suggest owner error rather than a rude dog to be honest - straight out of a car, straight into your shop - rather than letting him out after a car journey, have a walk around and then empty himself.

It is a training issue and it can be conquered.
 
My friend who has a Lab & Springer entire males would cock their leg in my house if they didnt go in the garden first. Diesel also did this in our own housewhen a visiting bitch called in and I booked him into being neutered pronto. I think if anyone has an entire male they must be aware of this and must make sure their dogs wee first before taking them into someones property.
 
my friend had an entire JR which would run round our fields for ages, then come in and cock his leg everywhere. He marked on everything. drove me up the wall. he has now been neutered and problem solved. Flodden did it once, in someone's house and his little bottom got rather a large smack and problem solved :) But then I clamped down on the humping as well, I can;t stand a humping dog, or groin sniffing!
 
My first Whippet was an ex-stud dog, he could be a dirty bugger, anywhere new and he would cock a leg. I learnt quickly - any new place we ventured, I would take him somewhere acceptable and let him pee to his hearts content. Even when he had exhausted supplies, I still kept half an eye on him! He was eventually castrated, didn't make any difference.
 
Took my 13 yr old terrier into the Fire station today ( which is lino floors and a bit dirty) and he cocked his leg on the station officers bike!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:eek: He has NEVER cocked his leg inside before I was gobsmacked but think he may have thought it wasn't like a house!! lol......... mopped it up quickly before big boss saw (sniggers)

That reminds me when my daughter insisted we took Olive the Werrier (3/4 Whippet btw) to Pets at Home. Daughter was walking her up and down the aisles (I knew we shouldn't have taken her) when Olive decided to squat right by a loose pile of pigs ears and excreted the biggest pee a little skinny mutt could produce. I had a choice - quick exit or confess to a shop assistant. I decided on the latter, the shop assistant was not impressed - I offered to clear it up and was rebuffed. :o
 
Yep, I accept that accidents can and do happen. I just find it really irritating because I find the smell is much harder to get out of dry wall than carpet!

I think with some dogs, that it can be corrected but the habit (if ingrained long enough) is VERY hard to break.
 
How does one stop leg cocking? Bracken peed on an indoor xmas tree at the farm shop the other day *cringe* He never cocks in the house, but does almost constantly outside now.

We don't want his bits off.

He's 8months. xx

HEHE u should have scarpered!! and blamed it on a cute puppy or something!
 
ok im going back years here - like 15:o

when i had my labrador,as a very irresponsible student who lived in a flat:o I broke up with my boyf and had found another flat for me and my dog to live in - groud floor garden flat with garden abd 5 mins from the beach:cool: The downside was it was very rundown and erm, a tad dirty when we moved in. Dog walked in and cocked his leg straight up the side of the oven:eek::o He HAD been out for a pee so didnt need, it was just a territory/scent thing. After Id scrubbed the place he never did it again in 15 years;)

LOL Oz did that at 8 months on my Cousins X-Mas tree..............Santa didn't come to him that year and he lost his baubles in the New Year :)
 
A dog that cocks needlessly is v annoying! I have the odd one at work that will cock in my corridors rather than wait til I am out of the kennel block, which makes the whole place smell disgusting but is somewhat expected.
Humping however! I cannot abide a dog that humps, my friend has a yorkie that sh**s everything in sight and it drives me up the wall. Of course he complains about it but god forbid he have it's balls off or actually disciplines it *sigh*. My dog got a swift slap on the arse the first time he tried and mercifully now knows not to bother :D

Yeh, it's that constantly having to watch them that you never feel like you can relax entirely.

Friends of mine have a wee Tibby that they have brought over. First time it pooped in my kitchen. Second time it peed outside my bedroom door! Nice. But that bothers me MUCH less than those dogs that have to wee up the walls. Some people will say "oh, that's just males, and they'll always do it!" but I can honestly say that mine have NEVER done it, in my house or elsewhere. They've had the odd squat cos they maybe were desperate...but never ever peed up the walls.
 
Milo is a leg cocker in new places, I never entirely trust him! Oddly ok out and about in shops or the vets etc its other houses I dont trust him in!
