I took Max (my pony) out for a hack today and for the first time he peed under saddle with me ontop

, got back to the yard (about half an hour later) got off and he peed again, rougly ten minutes he peed again, and another twenty minutes after that he had yet another pee, but to top it off about 10minutes after that I popped him into his stable for the evening and he had yet again another stonking pee

. He's never peed that many times before (well not that I've noticed), and they weren't short little pees either but rather long

. He has had colic before - don't know whether that could be linked

, but he showed no signs of colic or being off colour today

Bassically, should I be worried? And if this carries on should I call the vet? All advice appreciated.

Thanks in advance

If in doubt, I would call the Vet for a chat ....

I understand that straining to pee is a sign of Colic, however by the sound of it, he was having big pees, so I expect he has been drinking a lot more

How old is he?

Is he eating more hay at the moment, due to it being winter, as the weather has been so bad? If so it is probably dry(er) and is therefore making him drink more water, and thus peeing more?

I'd make sure he has plenty of water and keep an eye on things. There's an outside chance he's got a kidney infection but otherwise it might just be due to the water content of what he's eating, as E said. If he looks uncomfortable or has a raised temperature or starts straining without peeing or goes off his feed, vet, pronto.

Cheers guys

. Yes he is having more hay, out in the field, but having the same at night as per usual - his water bucket in his stable isn't getting drunk anymore than per usual. But come to mention it his bucket for the field is being drunk faster, but it's hard to tell as he's in with my other horse

. I'll definitly be keeping a close eye on him, hopefully it is just because he has had more hay, thus drinking more.

Will keep you updated

Peeing big pees five times in the space of one hour and ten minutes is not right!

If he's drinking enough to cause that, then he's drinking excessively for some reason. I think you should ring your vet and ask his advice. Kidneys are delicate things and having lost a horse to kidney failure it would be awful to cause a long term problem by not giving a course of antibiotics now. (I dislike the use of antibiotics by the way, I'm the last person to recommend them.)
