I am having real problems this year trying to protect my mares nose from the sun. Every day I put factor 50 sun cream on, plus sudocream in the evening. She wears a fly mask with a nose flap but nothing seems to help.

She has a large white blaze on her face and she is loosing the fur half way up her nose and her skin is peeling again! She is very pink underneath. However she does not mind me applying the potions and lotions and her nose is not hot or swollen. It probably looks far worse than it is but I would like to try and find a a way to give her greater protection if I can!

I do not leave the fly mask on all night as I'm not keen on doing that however she wears it from 6.30am to 6.30pm. I do keep her in during the day occasionally but the stables get full sun from about midday!

Is any body else's horse affected by the sun in the same way?

Yes. Load of them. I never knew that!

My Katie wears a special uv nose mask on a fieldsafe headcollar and you dont need to use cream all the time so as long as she has it on if the sun comes out i dont need to worry!! It works for buttercup burn too!!

I thought my boy was being affected by buttercups, but his nose got sore before they were out this year. And his mate who also has a pink nose was fine, which made me wonder if it was even sunburn.
I do find that P20 sun filter is really good, possibly because it allows them to tan, so makes the pink bits a bit more resistant to the sun. I got a cheaper filter last year called Calypso, and that is working just as well. I use it on me as well, and can spend a day working outside in the sun without going pink.

can you keep her in the day? yes buttercups can cause ulscers scabbing etc. Have you had bloods done for liver coz that can make you horse photosensitive?

I don't know if you're still keeping track of responses to this question. But just in case...
My pony was bought looking like a rescue case (if I hadn't know how hard they'd tried to help him I would have reported them!!).

He was so sunburnt, scabby, oozy, blistered and bleeding all round his muzzle and half way up to his eyes, it was awful. Unlike yours he HATED having any creams or lotions on and would scrape them off on fence posts and run his nose across the ground, which obviously made him worse!

Anyway, with him being so bad I think I can say I have tried everything on the market!

He's also a bit of a houdini so won't keep any type of mask or net on. The best thing I've tried is called P20. It's a suncream for humans, it's looks like an oily consistency but once you put it on you can't feel it at all (doesn't leave a sticky residue, it feels a bit like water) so he doesn't mind having it on. Also, it soaks in so you can't rub it off or wash it of (mine learnt the trick of dunking his nose in the water trough and swiching around to wash it off!).

Beware of suncreams for horses, they tend to have lanolin in the ingredients, which I have been told actually burns the skin in hot sun because it is an oil (from sheep skin/wool) so acts like Hawiian Tropic!

P20 is expensive, about £20 for a small bottle but you only need a tiny bit and you only need to put it on once a day and does last ALL day (some say they last 24hrs but really don't). So a small bottle will easily last me a whole season.

I used Naff MSN to heal the scabs which gave no protection, but healed it well.

That awful bleeding, scabbing, ozzing was about 10 years ago now and it took more than 2 years to get the hair to grow back on his nose. However, now I can put that P20 suncream on the night before (it lasts that well!) and he hasn't even had so much as a slightly pink nose for years.

I do think buttercups make it worse, I don't reckon they completely cause it, just make them more sensitive, but I personally don't have any evidence! It just makes sense looking back (the summers that he was out in the 'big field' were more of a battle).

If I can be of any more help, just ask.
