Have had to face up to rubbish eyesight, and start to wear glasses most of the time. Its not funny talking about the horse in the field that you get told is a cow as you cant see it properly:eek:

Any advice please, or pitfalls to avoid whilst wearing the things? And do you risk wearing them whilst riding?

I wear them all the time, blind as a bat otherwise!
They steam up out hunting, that was a nightmare. Make sure you get flexi frames with toughened glass - tell the optician you ride - so you don't have to get a new pair everytime you get boofed.
I used to wear contacts, much better, but can't anymore.
Glasses are a pain but better than not seeing.

I ride in mine all the time. most glasses aren't actually made from glass these days so not much risk!

The only problem I have get is that some nights I need windscreen wipers!

I HAD to - no ifs or buts about it!!! I wouldn't even be able to spot the cow-horse let alone what it was ;) (have had laser surgery now!)

The worst thing I found was getting head butted ;) just be careful as regards that - it hurts and you end up with broken specs - I had a pair of 'cheap' glasses to wear at the yard and for riding.
Also keep tissues handy - its a pain when the lenses get full of rain/mud!

Hi, I have had to wear glasses for years. Tell the person that makes them. I have plastic not glass. and also make sure they round off the lenses as it makes a mess when pushed into your face!! Other than needing windscreen wipers i don't notice any more. I gymkhana jump and sj with them. But i did find i had to tape them on for Sj otherwise i lost them in the jump offs. Imagine lots of hunting though grass blind trying to find them! :)

Am I the only person who's had glasses all their life and not had a horse related accident?! Go me! Have had them knocked off my face a few times but fortunately no lasting damage!

You just get used to it :)
i used to take my glasses off while i tacked up so i had adapted by the time i mounted. Jumping was less scary as couldn't see them properly ha ha. But had to remember where letters were as couldn't see them either.
Now i wear glasses all the time and its fine

Are contacts an option? Started wearing them when i was 13 ish before it was a nightmare..mucking out or riding they would slip down my nose. But i suppose if andrew nicholson can ride around 4*s with his on it can't be impossible!

Have to wear mine all the time otherwise I can't see at all (they don't help much but i can see a bit better with them on - not much can be done though because its a processing problem not my actual eyes )

Anyways, only had one accident with them around horses and that was when I fell off and landed with my head and shoulders first, they didn't break but were very wonky! Riding wise they're fine although sometimes they steam up or get rained on, but peaked hats helped with the rain. Someone should create windscreen wipers for glasses! Another thing is if I have to take them off whilst riding to clean them because of rain or steaming up, I usually find I cant get them back on with my hat done up so have to get someone to hold my horse/get off to undo or take my hat off to put them back on.

Not had too many problems though and have had glasses for 6 years now, and been around horses even longer :)

Wear mine all the time. Jump in them no problem. Xc, had a go at polox in them, fallen off, on occasion spectacularly but not fallen off my face, been kicked in face hard enough to fracture. They did come off then but no major damage, unlike my face lol. Get flexible frames and scratch resistant coating.

I keep a cheapy pair for riding, and have a couple of other pairs for 'good' ;)

If you are buying glasses, I highly recommend doing it online. You can save a fortune. I used a very good company, if you want to know details then PM me, don't want to be accused of advertising (I have absolutely nothing to do with them, but they really impressed me). The basics are that you can order 'blank' frames online to try on before you make any firm purchases and there are often very good 2 for 1 offers etc.

Ah yes, had heard about the rip offs in the high street. Will PM you for that name. I know they have to make their money but i need to keep my horses in the luxury they are accumstomed to!

sheep, do your people do prescription sunnies as well? I'm desperate for a pair for my drive to work but they're expensive and horrible in specsavers! I can't afford a pair of prescription Ray Bans which is what I actually want! BH has to be kept in halyage so no nice things for me :(

you dont get glass lenses nowadays unless you have a really complicated prescription that only come in that format. There should also be no need to ask the lab to 'round off' lenses.

Best advice if you have to wear them is to get lightweight or flexiframes as has been said. Also, try frames on with your riding hat to check they are comfy and dont dig in. Might look a bit daft but take your hat into the opticians with you, lol. Worst problem I find is in rain/drizzle, i only wear contacts every now and then. I used to work in an opticians btw:o

No problems at all, even my mouthy gelding does not touch them. Strange thing is though he did a double take when I wore contact lenses and also if I wear sunglasses he takes them off but never touches my glasses. As someone said they are not made of glass now so no so dangerous. BTW Tescos do cheap, £15 all in glasses for the yard.

Yeah I think so!

And they will prob have some ray ban type copies.. I'll PM you the name :)

get them to have a rumage to check for other frames ;) i was very very fussy about my prescription sunnies and got a pair from there that noone guesses are prescription and compliment me on all the time. The frame I liked wasnt on display though ;) There is nothing to stop you getting prescription lenses in a rayban frame either - unless you have a high cyl - astigmatism and you wanted a wrap around type of frame.

I wear them all the time to do pretty much everything in (I even have a supder duper suped up pair of Oakleys for playing hockey in as can''t wear contacts and don't fancy a hockey ball shattering glass all over my face :p ). I've actually never had a horse-glasses related problem except for the occasional head bash, but never any broken glasses :) and yup rain and steaming up (especially if you're wearing a scarf) are the biggest problem.

Jessstickle-David Clulow often have deals on 2 for 1 glasses and will put dark lenses in in you ask nicely :)

NSN- will do that. Need a contact lens check anyway so will have to go in soon.

Am not knocking specsavers FWIW, all my regular glasses are from them and I can't fault them for service. :)

V- are they on Mill Road? I recognise the name but can't quite pin point where in town they'd be?

I have a fairly severe astigmatism in both eyes and have wrap around glasses (granted not sunnies, but I wouldn't of thought that would have made a difference...may be wrong though)

I used to take them off when I was riding - couldn't really see where I was going though
I had contacts for a few years but all the dust made my eyes really itchy.
LASIK was the best thing I ever did :D

I'm almost blind without them, so I have no choice. I have contact lenses that I wear for any jumping, or hunting, or higher risk things, but day to day I wear my glasses.
I've only had 2 incidents that I can remember. The nasty one, was when I was bronked off my TB and landed on the back of my head. My hat pushed my glasses down and I got two black eyes from it. That was quite scary and painful!
The other time was a couple of weeks ago, my younger horse was feeling naughty and took off on the lunge as I sent him out, and somehow my glasses got knocked off, and I was stood there blind, not daring to move in case i trod on them while trying to hold onto a lunatic whizzing round and round.

I agree, I've always had good service from specsavers, except for when they get all funny about me wanting to switch to daily lenses from monthly ones.. then I moved somewhere where you can just buy lenses off the shelf in what I suppose is the equivalent of Woolworths (but nicer!) here.

really? how wrap around if you dont mind me asking? Ive tried for years to get wrap around sunnies but the lab always tells me that to get the lenses into a wrap around frame is too risky and they just break.

i dont work for specsavers btw lol- it was a long time ago when i was a student, *cough* 15 years maybe?

No, they're in town, next to superdrug. Can't think of the road but it's the one with Fopp, Mayhem, STA Travel, Ryman's etc. on. Opposite the big Costa. They don't seem the cheapest at first, but the deals they do are really good and if you get Taz she's lovely (done my eyes for longer than I care to remember :p )

They're like these, but mine seem more curved, though not full wrap around having just seen some of the others, my bad

Only the cost of buying the frames :p Really can't justify myself a pair of aviators at the moment which is what I want. I think OH would be pretty cross if I took his and had prescription lenses put in!! :D

V- no idea why I thought mill road then. Don't think I've ever noticed them there somehow, despite spending absolutely hours in Fopp :o

I used to wear them, was blind as a bat, never had any incidents.
But OMG if you can afford it, get laser eye surgery. It will change your life. I did it last April, and it has been completely life changing. They accept monthly installments :D
Do it, Do it!!! x
