Peeps that wear glasses around horses.

I do pinch OH's Oakley wrap arounds and wear with contacts if I'm running. I do wear contacts, am just quite lazy and often can't be bothered if I'm just going to work!

Next task my speccy friends. Non hideous prescription safety glasses for the lab. Mine are just awful and everyone else has cool wrap around style bolle ones :( Mine make me look like the archetypal geeky scientist!

Only the cost of buying the frames :p Really can't justify myself a pair of aviators at the moment which is what I want. I think OH would be pretty cross if I took his and had prescription lenses put in!! :D

V- no idea why I thought mill road then. Don't think I've ever noticed them there somehow, despite spending absolutely hours in Fopp :o

they are so expensive arent they:rolleyes: the mark up is unbelievable - we used to get 2 free pairs every 6 months whether we needed glasses or not. I was walking round in calvin klein or gucci specs and rayban or oakley sunnies.... cant believe how cheap they are, its just the name:o

haha, I on the other hand spend hours perving on the window display (probably the same amount of time I spend perving on the hot guys that work in the Fopp basement :p ) I really want (to look good enough to wear :p ) these http://www.ray-ban.com/uk/products/sun/RB2140-5?var=1092/3F

I hate wearing my glasses at the yard and when riding as I find them really annoying! For me, I generally wear contacts as I feel more free and only ever wear my glasses if my eyes feel particularly dry and in need of a break. I'm hoping to save up for laser eye surgery though as I'm sure the amount I spend on contacts would work out to be the same!

haha, at least you don't have to do the glasses with safety glasses on top look. The guys in the lab just love me! Also the reason I can't watch 3D films, those glasses really don't sit well over normal glasses! lol

I actually own tortoiseshell wayfarers already :o Non prescription though. I'd love a turquoise pair they do too.

Have never noticed the fitties in Fopp. Must look more closely next time!

Have never tried 3D tv. Guess I'd have to put my lenses in. I had no idea you were a lab person, what kind?

NSN- I obviously need to get myself a job at specsavers! I'd be laughing.

Buy from the likes if glassesdirect.com you get a set for £25 so if they get broke not a big deal. I buy all mine from there , you just get your eyes tested on highstreet and take the prescription away with you.

I wear my glasses all the time for horses, only time i struggle is when its pouring down!! I cannot see a single thing, and have to put them ontop of my head, not much better.

I remeber last year, i was watching the horses in a field from a distance with a freind, and said im just going to go and check so and so, they havnt moved since we been here - (WAS A BUSH) :o:o:o

Tbh, I dont even know im wearing them. I really want to try and wear contacts, but feel like a chineese person without them on! (my eyes dont look right without glasses);)

charcoalfeathers - I worked out that 7 years of buying contact lenses is equivalent to the cost of LASIK (assuming yours costs the same as mine - £5000)
so contact lenses at £177 every 3 months is £708/year or £4956 over 7 years :)

Given that my contacts are only £12 a month it would take a while to be as expensive as laser correction

Plus I am a bit of a sceptic about laser eye surgery. I want to know that in 30 years time it'll not need doing again (or worse, won't cause some hideous side affects) and there just isn't enough of a sample set who've reached that point for me to convince myself yet.

I'd rather stick to my tried and tested glasses :)

I wear mine all the time I have quite severe astigmatisim so contacts are not an option until they invent stronger ones.
I do everything in mine and the only issues i've had are rain, wearing a scarf in winter as your breath goes up and steams them up and steaming up when hunting.

On the upside the chances on getting hay or a fly on a good gallop in your eye are lessoned!

Pay the extra for scratch resistant though!

I personally would never ride in glasses. A few years ago my dad fell off his horse and his glasses very nearly sliced his nose off - it was hanging on by the thinnest bit of skin. He had it sown back on and now has a scar all the way round - not nice.

Am I the only person who's had glasses all their life and not had a horse related accident?! Go me! Have had them knocked off my face a few times but fortunately no lasting damage!

I have worn glasses since I was 18months old and am a LOT older now. Never had a problem with my glasses or an accident doing anything.

Rain can be a pain but peaked hats are brilliant.

I can't cope with contacts and laser is too expensive and probably wont work (have rugby ball shaped eyes).

P.S. Mine also don't come off during SJ - only suggestion make sure they aren't too loose or buy a neoprene head holder you can get for canoeing etc

I ride in mine although if I am x countrying/ hunting (I say that, havent done in years) I would wear contacts.

Rain is a pain. I hate getting sweaty when mucking out as well as it steams them up. Watch out for nosey cobs as well lost two frames with my old cob giving me a kiss and then good bye glasses. Then there is the annoying steam up when getting in the car when its wet and cold outside grrrrr I hate that.

Haven't read the whole thread but have noticed that some opticians, for example boots, do 2 for 1 deals which is great for a second pair to use at the yard or for a pair of prescription shades.

It should also be possible to buy sports glasses which have an elastic band, plastic frames and fit tight, for example those used for squash. If you google sports glasses there will be several places to get them (though they may cost a bit!)

I don't wear specs but the OH has worn them for longer than he has been riding and *touch wood* hasn't had a horse/glasses related accident. He won't change his glasses for horse stuff, in fact I have tried getting him to have two pairs and switching between them but he doesn't like changing them and says that they are uncomfortable, or hurt his eyes changing between two pairs that are the same prescription but different designs.

He has his from Asda and they have a great choice VERY cheap. His current ones are Terence Conran and he got them on their two pairs for £90 deal. That includes standard lenses but he paid extra for lightweight lenses with a scratch proof coating and for photochromatics in one pair (but he can't get on with those).

They did a repair job on them when he stood on them for free too and we both expected that they would be irrepairable.

Totally agreed if there were long term data results i would feel more inclined as to have perfect eyesight would be completely wonderful.

Personaly I use disposable daily contacts for jumping/compeating/hunting and cheap robust plastic lensed glasses for everyday riding/yard work.I keep my posh nice ones for best. I find that if the frames are too small the wind gets in and makes my eyes water alot, glass lenses can be very heavy and tend to slip more, or leave marks on your nose!

Oh and it is worth reading Mark Philips biography on the subject of riding with/without glasses. Apparently in the early years of his eventing career he had to memorise the course in such a way he could navigate around it despite not being able to see from one fence to the next or make use of the usual landmarks until contact lenses became available.

Make sure they fit well behind your ears! Taking a riding hat is a good idea, not that I've ever thought to do it.

Have your old pair in the car in case anything awry does happen. Have had one pair horribly mangled when pony decided to snap her head round to look at something and wiped me out - worse thing was the bruised bridge of my nose.

One pair was obliterated when she pulled me over when lunging - landed ON my face :( Moral is -always wear a hat when lunging.. Still haven't found the missing lens (half frames - the plastic "wire" snapped. they also letfy a gouge in my cheek from the frames - but nothing to bad.

But I've worn glasses for nearly 30 years now - so that's not too bad I thought. I agree with others - them steaming up and the rain are the horrible things...

DO have the antiscratch coating - as you'll find you never have a tissue to hand when its most needed and you'll start using your clothes to wipe them!!

When I was younger I used to wear them but not for riding, then could see nothing so started to wear them. I had them shoved off my face when handling the horses but found they stayed on ok with a hat when riding. Got contacts when I was 16 and despite the dust etc found it soooo much better than glasses. I was quite astigmatic but I had gas perms as the soft ones could not correct my astigmatism then (think they can now). I did a month of glasses only before my laser treatment so had to wear them for riding then. I felt a bit vulnerable but they did stay on. I had them lasered three years ago and honestly its like a miracle having taken place. Best thing I ever did.

I've worn specs since I was 8 (a bl**dy long time ago) and have always been around horses and never had a problem at all apart from them sliding down my nose when I got/get very hot

Wore contacts for over 20 years but got fed up with scratched eyeballs/visiting eye hospital because of getting 'things' in my eyes then gave them up after getting oxygen starvation/neo-vascularisation, now just where specs all the time - plastic varifocals and rimless. No problemo, apart from needing a new prescription now but can't afford a new pair!

Wear mine all the time (running on radar otherwise). I'm sure I was told many years ago the glass lenses were safer, as glass will shatter into small pieces while plastic will break into longer shards which could pierce the eye more deeply. Perhaps things have changed now? I've only got one pair - can't afford another. Luckily they seem to fare well (touch wood).
