Peer Pressure?

No I don't think I am a victim of peer pressure. I have my own mind and am comfortable that I have enough knowledge to make reasonable decisions when it comes to my horse. Having said that I will ask for other's opinions if I want them. Similarly I am open to suggestions but that does not mean I will take them on board if I don't think they are best for my horse.
 
I don't think I'm affected much by peer pressure, I do my own thing and am at a yard on my own, so just get on with it. which rug or how many rugs Flash has on depends on what I'm wearing, if I'm cold and wearing loads of layers, he does too!
 
My horse is at home so I do what I like and look after my horse in the way that seems to suit him and his personality. I can check him if the weather changes and rug or un-rug as I wish as I work from home. But I have been put under peer pressure and it got me into trouble so I don't listen now as I am confident that I know what I am doing and how best to look after my horse.
 
i must say i was effected at one of the yards i was on (by YO not other liveries) i thought she must be more experienced than me in horse ownership so i listened to what she said

izzy had never been rugged up but YO said that she would be happy to clip izzy so i would need a rug and she could get hold of one for me for £15 so i thought well thats not too bad ill give it a try got nothing to loose (didn't clip her in the end)
but i did rug her up because she kept dropping hints

then one day i went out riding and the hunt was out izzy took off with me and i had no breaks lol so she said it would be a good idea to put her in a dutch gag (i am embarrased to say i did)

it was only a couple of months ago after moving off the yard a year ago that i was riding out in a head coller and thought why the hell is my pony in a gag when i can control her easily in a head coller so she is now back in a snaffle
 
I think it really depends on the horses. I have two cob mares, both are clipped and live out, one has to be fed good quality feed, joint supps, and excercised regul. to maintain her fitness, and the other I could feed sawdust and she would still look sleek and shiney. I don't think I listen to advise other horsie people give unless its actually asked for, and they actually know my horses and their temperaments enough to pass comment (which is usually a good indication as to how reliable it is!). But they do have a way of making you feel really guilty sometimes. Someone commented with disdain that they saw me trotting on the road up a hill the other day. Apparently that is a no no in her book

Nope I don't think so. I always liek to knwo what everyone else is doing and ask lots of questions, but then do my own thing anyway (unless I realise that I'm being stupid). When I was younger and very inexperienced (aged around 10 or so) then I would have succumbed to peer pressure but after that I was so proud of my horse and looking after her/him that I've always wanted to do everything my own way.
 
For me (horses kept at home) HHO gives all the advantages of a livery yard ie access to diff people's opinions and methods with none of the disadvantages (noone can borrow your stuff). Advice is given on HHO, but it is easier for me to then back off, assimilate it all and decide whether to try something new or not, because it is not happening face to face in real life.
My pensioner loves his soaked oats, and if I never get another good tip on here again, I will always be glad I got that one.

If I were on a livery yard, I would probably be too easily persuaded to do stuff (if I respected the person telling me though), so in that respect am agreeing with Lec. It is easier to have horses at home and to please only yourself.

Does that make sense at all.

I don't think it's so much peer pressure as people think that they're being kind to their horses by feeding them huge bucket fulls of feed - You'd be amazed what folk actually feed their horses and then tell me that "the horse doesn't really get much" Eeek - god knows what they'd describe as "a lot"

I have only had Cropi for 2 1/2 years and I am still learning. I am now a lot more confident with my decisions and reasons behind her care, but I am always willing to listen to advise or suggestions. I will often take them on board but don't necessarily change what I am doing if I don't agree with it. Its when someone says something in a demeening way that flicks a switch in me and I almost panic that I'm doing something wrong and not looking after her properly, although I know that this is not true, she is looked after very well and she is one of the most loved horses I know, I still worry.......a lot

I don't follow fads at all though, Cropi is not a follower of fashion.........she starts them
