Anyone know how to compare different feeds when the information I can find about them doesn't show the same information?

i.e.

Pegasus
Typical Analysis

Moisture 18%, Oil 2.25%, Protein 4%, Fibre 27% ,Ash 7%

Hi Fi Lite
Typical Analysis:
Protein 10%, Oil 1.5%, Fibre 35%, Ash (mineral) 9%, Starch 1.5%, Sugar 7%, Digestible Energy 7.5MJ/kg

The reason that I am asking is that my friend and I have been sharing bags of chaff. It was her turn to buy some and as there was no Hi-fi lite she came back with the Pegasus.

As my girl is a good doer who has had lami in the past I'm not feeling very comfortable with the Pegasus. It's not a major issue as I have plenty of hi-fi left at the moment and can pick up another bag easily, but am I being over fussy?

What is the remainder of the feed make up as only about 60% is listed?

Anyone know what the sugar content of the Pegasus is?

Thank you in advance for any help

No I don't think you're being over fussy, I wouldn't feed pegasus to a horse at risk of lami either! Don't know the sugar content but would imagine it is quite high.

Hi fi is a straw, alfalfa mix whereas pegasus is just chopped straw covered in molasses if I'm correct?

(And pegasus is about half the price of hi fi lite, cheap skate mate ;) )

Yeah, she did mention the price;)

I don't mind that as she does a lot of turn outs as she works just by the yard.

It does say the coating is low sugar

"Pegasus Chaff is an ideal feed for bulking out cubes and mixes to encourage chewing, extend eating time and support healthy digestion. This economical chaff contains quality dust extracted straw and low sugar coating to provide bulk without adding excess calories to the diet. Pegasus Chaff also contains real garlic to eliminate the need for extra supplementation."

Actually, I'm rethinking things now and wondering about giving pure feeds a go once I have finished what I have now as I have discovered a stockist local to me.

*Goes off to find out what people on here have to say about them........*

Just because my local supplier stocks the hi fi lite and not the molasses free. She also gets no where near the 1.5 - 2.5 kg recommended per day. She get about half a scoop at the moment with her feed balancer (baileys local) which is only about 150g. That will go up to about 450g max in the depths of winter (one scoop for dinner and half for breakfast)
