I've been cubbing this morning and saw alot of pelham type bits with the curb on and a flash, i always thought this way a no no, what are your thoughts?
Not technically correct, but if it's the combination that works for the horse/rider then fine.
There is a young rider up my yard with a lovely (but strong cob), she goes XC in a rubber pelham with a leather curb strap and a flash. He is happy in this combination, and they are both SAFE!!!
I had a VERY strong tbxconnie when I was younger and i rode her in a rubber pelham and flash on the advice of the YM. It worked for us and like PS said, at least we were safe!
I wouldn't normally but when I rode Jazz on the fun ride I put him in a pelham (with a curb chain) and his grakle noseband. He has a history of brake issues and wanted to over bit (rather than underbit and have a battle).
As it was, I didn't need the bottom rein of the pelham so just tied it off and dropped it. He was therefore basically ridden in his hanging cheek snaffle.
I'd agree with you Connie - was just explaining why some people do find that a pelham with a flash does give them more control than using another bit! I'm not a fan of the combination at all!
QR.
Go & watch county level workers, SJ, or eventing at any level & you will see Pelhams of all descriptions as well as double bridles with grackle & flash type nosebands. Is it correct? No.
Does it seem to work for the horses & riders? Yes.
As PBS says if it makes life safer for the rider & the horse is happy there just isn't a problem
i hunted most of last season in a pelham and grackle. the flash bit of the noseband sits just below where the curb chain comes into action so it doesn't stop it working.
