Pelham bit help

I've been advised to try a pelham bit oh horsey with i've got hold of but after looking for info about them (and being a bit of a bit novice!) i was wondering that if i only use one rein with it, will this make it any less effective??
 
Absolutely it will! There is little point in using a pelham and only using one rein IMO. Obviously if you do decide to do this you will get roundings to attach the rein to. I can't see much point in doing this, although I have tried it for adult gymkhana (didn't work out well!) Might be worth talking to an instructor about what you need to do.
 
I ride my horse in a Pelham with 2 reins however you can get rounding for them (they basically join the top and bottom together) and you attach a single rein to the end of them. Do you have a curb chain? You need to twist it until it lies flat against his chin and hook it on. I don't think there's much more to it, quite simple really x
 
I realise you need the roundings now, just wanted opinions on whether it is worth just using one rein or if the effect only happens with two. Will get a curb chain too.
I also presume i will need to use a cavesson noseband as he s in a grackle at the mo?

You're probably better off with one rein to a rounding if you're inexperienced with using two reins. It can be quite a handful having all of it your hands, especially if your horse is strong/excitable. Maybe have some lessons with two reins though, as it definately works better that way.

If using one rein you should use roundings.
You should change the noseband.

You would be best off finding an instructor and taking some advice direct, it wouldn't be the first time on here that someone had got the bit in upside down.

Thanks, i've got someone there tomorrow when changing them over just wanted to know that using one rein still make it useful really.
 
I ride in a pelham with roundings and one rein. With a cavesson noseband and curb chain. It gives me brakes in a way that the snaffle and drop noseband don't. Rather important when I need him to stop so we can check for traffic before we cross the road... Far better than fighting him in the snaffle I think... This is purely for when we are riding on the open forest. Roadwork and schooling are done in the snaffle.
