Got a weird pelham in a delivery today, standard shape cheeks with a double jointed type mouth - mouthpiece has a cut out rectangle shape, literally a thin outline of metal with a space in the middle.

It lays at an angle more like a Doctor Bristol plate than a French link and tested against my hand is fairly severe!

Came with a bundle of 1960s and 1970s hunting tack, looks like it was for a big horse.

Any ideas?

A picture would help.

Ooh very similar! Bit more rounded than mine but definitely a good lead thank you.

Further googling confirms it to be an egglink made to a slightly different pattern than normal!

Thanks all.

Yes I had one in before but it was a snaffle rare to find. I think they are called Dick Christian.

The Dick Christian snaffle I have has a middle oval that can move more than the pelham illustration. It's more like the link on a mouthing/key bit without the keys.

Mine was bought in 1980s for a young thoroughbred who liked it very much and used it all his long life. I've kept it as it is a nicely made bit and not often seen.

The one I had was more like a rectangle. Well that's what they call it on some sites. Who knows 🤣

Is the rectangle for a tongue spoon to slot into to prevent the tongue coming over the bit? …not sure how you’d secure it mind!
