i ride my horse in a pelham or double bridle for showing and ride in the normal fashion with both hands haha! hate myself now for throwing out my manual of horsemanship which showed me how to hold all four reins in one hand so.

does anybody know how its done and be able to explain to me? please! and also how popular it is at high level shows now i know it was popular not so long ago!

If you don't know how to use the double reins - then do you NEED the double reins? If not why don't you get some rounding attachments for your pelham and just use the one set of reins? Much simpler :)

for showing haha we currently ride in a normal pelham the normal way! 2 reins in each hand:p but we were told in a recent lesson to try an old showing hype of holding all reins in one hand and just holding my showing cane in the other.. dont see the point but thought its a challenge to try :p

think i worded my original message badly... i already ride in double bridle/pelham with double reins:D i was told by an instructor to try it one handed for showing! sorry for my bad explaining im rubbish at it :p

I didn't know this was FOR showing -
I read it as "how do i use double reins?"

certainly not helped by my rubbish explanation! just trying to find out the very rare way of holding all four reins in one hand rather than the traditional way i already ride in!:D
 
Are you sure you don't mean the 3+1 method? Where the left hand was the bridle hand and the right hand was the sword hand. Both curb reins go to the left hand along with the left snaffle rein and the right snaffle goes to the right hand along with the whip or show cane in your case (or indeed sword). See the link I posted earlier for diagrams.

Not sure how you do it but have seen people in showing classes holding all reins in one hand and sort of holding the other arm out to the side with the cane. Think to show how well the horse is schooled/trained.
No idea how they hold them as only do m&m classes and they dont do it.
 
Really only at the Highest Level of Showing ie HOYS RIHS qualifiers and the finals would there be a need for riding with reins in one hand. Hacks are seen being ridden one handed as it is show that the horse has the manners and calmness to go quietly with only the most minimum contact. Not easy when there are 20+ horses all charging around a small Ring with lots of distractions.

It just bugs me when people don't bother to read the original post properly then jump in with sarcastic comments, people come on here for help and advice, no need for put-downs. I did retract my comment but as you had already responded then this explains my response, sorry just been reading so many unnecessary arguments on here lately!

It wasn't sarcastic in the slightest!!!! And how was advise a 'put-down.'
It was intended in this way -
it appeared OP's horse went well in a pelham, she appeared to not know how to use double reins - it then appeared to me she'd never personally ridden him in the double reins - hence the roundings - she gets the bit that horse goes well in but without the hassle of learning to use double reins.

How sarcastic and condescending of me, I really am a shockingly evil person :o:rolleyes:

There wasn't an argument on here at all but you've just created a very unnecessary one! Pot kettle..
