I have a loose ring/show pelham (low port) that I really like the feel of riding my horse in. It fits nicely width wise and I put it in at a height I'm happy with (slight wrinkle on his lips).
The issue is when I ride in it and take a contact the cheekpieces go baggy (they gap away from his face). There is obviously no poll pressure (which I don't mind as he feels brilliant in it) but it looks really scruffy and I'm planning on showing in it next week. If I put it any higher it looks like I'm wrenching his mouth up his face.
Does anyone have any ideas on what I might be getting wrong? Curb too tight or too loose? Should I try it lower in his mouth? Any suggestions greatly received or I will have to go in the double - which looks nicer but I think will give the judge a slightly more "definite" (i.e. heavy) contact.

Do you mean a rugby pelham?

Are you also using a seperate sliphead onto the loose ring? If not put one on.

The curb chain should not affect the cheek pieces at all.
