Pelham vs Kimblewick

Firstly, thank you all so much for your replies to my post yesterday about my pony tanking off. You made me feel much better.

Now I'm just not sure which bit to try out of the pelham or the kimblewick.

I like the sound of the kimblewick because it's only one set of reins, but then again ponio was ridden in a rubber pelham with roundings (by kids) before i got him (but was a lot less fit). If I go for one with a curb I will be using an elastic/leather curb or a rubber guard on the chain to start with.

If I go for the kimblewick do I definitely need one with slots?

Please help me make a decision, as I'll be going shopping tomorrow and need to know which one I want to go for!

have you tried a hanging cheek? my horse is a cob like yours and i find he can get strong (on occasion) but he goes really well in it, also its a french link JP which he likes because he has such a big tongue (like most cobs!)

i like rubber pelhams and it doesnt take long to learn to use 2 reins so you have much more choice in the pressure you put on.

Rubber pelham two reins.

It really doesnt take that long to get the hang of two reins... you don't even need a contact on the bottom pair if you don't want to.

Can you borrow a kimblewick or pelham to try. A Pelham is going to have more curb action than a kimblewick, so I would be inclided to try a kimblewick 1st. If you are having to buy one, I would buy a slotted Kimblewick (you don't have to use the slots, but it gives you that option if required, without having to buy a 2nd bit).

ETA - I would go for a cambridge mouth piece (low port) as give more tongue room.

i quite like jointed pelhams with 2 reins, its quick to leqarn to use 2 reins and you can ride on the snaffle rein and back it up with the curb when needed-much more effective than a constant curb action, they can begin to stop listening.if you really dont want to use 2 reins, you could always try rounding. which ever bit you go for-i found elastic curb chains are much better accepted by horses than chain ones. just my opinion.
