Pelham - What dressage bit?!

My Welshy is currently ridden in a Hard Rubber Pelham.

Hes very strong (puts head down, bears down on the bit and buggers off!) when he wants to be so this is perfect, hes happy in it and seems to like the security of a big bit in his mouth (rather than happy mouth ones I tried).

Hes used to be strong in the arena but we seem to have nipped it in the bud with the help of my instructor!

So basically what should I use for dressage?!

We are hoping to get out in the new year and do a few tests... So i am looking for a bit that is dressage legal but has a bit more control than just a snaffle

In an ideal world, I'd say carry on schooling in a snaffle, or a double so he has to get attuned to the snaffle action. Seeing as it is about the horse being soft and obedient, there's not really getting out of it I'm afraid!

Only thing I'd suggest, is a snaffle with a very thin mouthpiece if you need it 'sharper'.

You are stuffed then, unless he is capable of more advanced moves, thus can skip a few levels and wear a double.

I'll be honest, I don't know a massive amount about bits. I use a Pelham though on my tank of a mare who likes to bugger off, and when I was looking into it, was planning on trying a hanging cheek as still has a bit of poll pressure (although after research, this is also debateable)

Try using a three ring snaffle (not Dressage legal) on whichever ring you need now with the aim of finally getting to use the top ring only which is then very like a hanging cheek snaffle which is dressage legal. Then for dressage make the transistion to the hanging cheek snaffle, I would personally prefer a french link one but whatever suits your horse.
