ive always been anti pellet as i didnt realise you re hydrate it! i honestly thought they had to lay on the pellets themselves.

now i want them for my 2 as my gelding in foul. hes soooo wet. he tips his water over his bedding everynight and it drives me mad as well as costs an arm and a let.

can anyone recommend the best pellets please?

thank you :)

Pellets may not help you! They are very good and super absorbent, but water buckets tipped over them every night will mean you are having to take out much more than you would otherwise. I speak from experience, my ASBO pony used to do this.

I got him a couple of big water buckets, fitted them inside old car tyres, and he no longer tips his water over. The pellets now last as they should!

I use Liverpool Wood Pellets. I have tried others but have found these to be the best. You have to work out how you want to manage them though - it took me a while to be happy with them.

What I tend to do is skip out poo every day. If there is a very soggy patch of pee I take out the worst of it. The damp bits are left and the bed raked flat.

At the weekend I turn over the whole bed with a shovel, taking out any wet bits, rake flat, then top up with 2 presoaked bags of bedding to make it all look pretty again! I use 3 litres of water per 15kg bag, tip it all into a wheelbarrow and leave to soak for the day.

Hope that helps!

My girl always used to tip water, I don't know why you put up with it!! If you get the big stubbs water buckets they fit perfectly in a tyre to prevent them tipping. If this doesn't work you can get the clips that attach to the wall so you can hook the handle onto the clip and then they can't tip the bucket. Otherwise you could get the smaller standard buckets and the wall holders for them and hang them up higher. Personally I like them on the floor as I think it's more natural for horses to eat and drink at this level as they would in the wild, but if water tipping or splashing in the buckets with feet is a problem, then hanging them higher up might work for you :)

As to the wood pellets, it depends on how messy your horse is. If they tend to trash their muck about as well pellets are a nightmare as they coat all the bits of muck, which is then scattered everywhere!! My girlie is very wet and dirty and I have tried supposedly absorbent bedding. It is much more absorbent, but the problem is it costs so much and with a wet/dirty horse even though the amount is less than a straw or shavings bed, it still works out much more expensive. I have found the cheapest thing for me and my girl is barley straw. The barley seems better as it doesn't take up as much of the wet, so I don't waste as much and I'm not allergic to it (which I am to wheat straw!) If she has a bad day, I can still take out a load of straw and replace it so much more cheaply than using the alternatives.

On the plus point the pellets are supposed to be great and if your horse isn't too messy once you sort out the water bucket issue you may find it much more economical and cheap.

Good luck

I've tried Liverpool Wood Pellets before but got quite poor service, so I switched to Five Star Bedding about a year ago. Eden Products provided what looked to be the same pellets at the same price but without the delivery problems I had through LWP.
