Pellets V Shavings (again - sorry)

Hi All

Sorry to ask again, this Q gets done to death, but what are your opinions of pellets v shavings? Basically, shavings where I am are £8-9+ a bale and I have a wet horse! Is it actually more economical having pellets? If so, which do you prefer and what are you paying.

pellets over shavings for me. they are much much much more absorbant. if you top up the bed with dry ones, they'll soak up much more wet.

i pay about £210 per tonne. that would last one wet horse about a year. remember they swell up to about 4 or 5 times their size so don't judge them by size but how much you use... x
 
pellets over shavings for me too, i pay no more than 210 per tonne. I bought my first tonne in December, I have used over half of it but i have 2 horses on thick beds, they were in quite a lot longer than normal during the snow etc. pony has a 15kg bag every 2 weeks ish, dirty horse has 1-2 15kgs per week but they have large deep beds usually. I simply could not afford shavings.
 
I hate shavings and I was at my wits end with my mare being filthy on straw. I got 50 bags of white horse pellets for £182 and they are fab. I put half a bag in twice a week to keep it fluffy and she takes 5 mins twice a day to muck out. I will never use anything else again.
 
Liverpool Wood Pellets for me - with Farra I can use 2 - 3 x 15 k bags a week and 1 - 2 bags for Chancer but this is till half the cost I was paying out for megazorb and shavings. I have just bought my second 1000k which should last me until they go out again so for me I need two loads to last six months with two horses, but Farra is a clydesdale and very very wet and on ad lib hay and eats up to a bale a day some times with the obvious consequences.

Mucking out is very easy - Stinky is skipped and I take out the wet at the weekend and top up with 1 - 2 bags. Farra has wet out mid week and topped up with 1 - 2 bags and the same at the weekend.

With Farra, I like to take the whole bed out every 5 weeks and restart with 4 bags due to her being so dirty. They are both on thick rubber mats and I like the bed over half the stable and about 3" - 4" deep to soak up the pee.

Easy to store - the 1000k load is on a 1 m square pallet and stands about 1.5 m high and can be kept outside - I put a tarp on top.
 
Pellets over any bedding for me and I've used the lot before!!!

Started on one of the more expensive makes, but have now switched to Corley to see if they make any difference. Certainly when I did a test at home on how much they soak up/look like etc/expand, the Corley ones actually came out just as white and better on expansion/absorbency than White Horse.
 
Guys - thank you all for your responses, looks like I'll have to give it a go! Now just need to find a stockist - want to buy a few bags to try before organising deliveries etc. I can't store outside (private yard, she'd kill me:) but I do have a barn that currently holds 20x haylage and 20x shavings, so it should fit in.
