Penis removal

I knew of one. As far as I know the operation and recovery were fine, but it was an old horse, late 20s I think, and it died not very long afterwards but just of old age.

We had one at work that had his chopped in half to remove a sarcoid. I don't know how much it cost but recovery was pretty much the same as a castration.

No idea on cost but a friend of mine had a horse full removal a few years ago and horse made a complete recovery back to competing.

Physio's pony. Recovered well and back to bring ridden - wees like a girl now!

They found a lump during a routine willy wash, every one thought it would be nothing to worry about but tests said otherwise sadly.

Sort of for my horse and a horse at the yard has had it done. My boy has melanomas in his sheath. We decided against it in the end because he doesn't seem bothered by them at all and we could put him through all that only for them to cause problems elsewhere. We made that decision 7 years ago and although they've grown, they still don't bother him (other than me needing to clean them - that really bothers him!)

The other horse on the yard had a carcinoma. He'd had a lump removed in the past and it came back so a total resection was the only option. He was in hospital about 3/4 days (it was over the Easter bank holiday so he might have been in a bit longer than normal) and I believe it cost around £3k. He bounced back really quickly and really well. He was about 8 at the time and otherwise fit and healthy. He was on box rest for about a week until the stitches dissolved then was out as normal. His owner didn't ride him for about a month but I think a fair amount of that was her wanting to be certain he was healed. He's always been a bit precious about weeing - he'll only wee on grass and this didn't change anything! His owner had to wash his tail a lot in the early days but he seemed to get the hang of it pretty quickly.

My gelding had a partial. My reasons being that the full en bloc was quite a major op with a lengthy recovery and the possibility of complications while he learnt to ‘pee the other way’. The horse was retired, mid teens and I chose quality of life over quantity. I was told that a partial would remove most lesions and what was left we could treat topically, but no doubt it would recur at some point and decisions would have to be made. With a partial phallectomy he was out in the field after 48 hours, had a bit of swelling that subsided over a week or two and no further complications. The remaining lesions were treated topically. I can’t remember full costs but I’m pretty sure it was around £1k, so not that much really.
I’m glad I chose the partial and not the full. He would have had to endure months of box rest and we were coming in to summer so I did not wish this to happen for a retired horse who I was essentially just giving a few extra years to.

I know someone who’s breeding stallion developed a penis infection then a weird growth. They tried everything and were treating twice daily with something from their vets. It went on for months and they were trying to avoid removing his penis or pts as it had got very bad.
On the off-chance they knew a homeopathist who gave them some kind of homeopathy remedy, and lo and behold it cured him!
I have no idea what was the true diagnosis or the homeopathy remedy, but considering the hell they went through and the severity is developed enough for considering penis removal or pts, their case taught me to be very open minded when it comes to alternative treatments.
It really was miraculous, and obviously wont work for every case, but for the small chance of something ’alternative’ working, i’d certainly try that too now.

My gelding must have had this done before I got him, I thought it was odd he never let it all hang out so to speak so I got vet to check all was ok and the vet explained the issue. He will not let anyone near his bits for any reason but that seems to be only long term side effect, so I get the vet to sedate and clean properly for him every once in a while, otherwise no other issues. Although since I have had him he's developed PPID and had a tumour on his third eyelid so would say perhaps he has an inclination toward this type of thing happening.

I am
More swaying towards partial if it is that she’s hoping shes wrong but have to think worse case scenario, he wont cope with Lengthy recovery bix rest especially coming into summer , hes already been through multiple surgeries for melamomas/ bleeding into his abdomen/ server inflammation throughout his instestintss and to come back from all of this and compete and even again is a miracle so not sure full resection is the right thing to do xxx hes 18 also which i know isnt okd but hes not young xxx
