I posted on her a few months back after noticing a lump on my new boys penis! I had the vet take a look who advised to leave alone and monitor. Last weekend his sheath became swollen and after sedation discovered that the lump had grown somewhat. He was given antibiotics and went in today for a penis amputation. However once heavily sedated it became apparent the lumps were all over his prepuce and furthermore his sheath had tripled in size with swollen lymph nodes and area infrint of his sheath filled with fluid. They've cut away Some of his prepuce (sheath?) and I have to collect him tomorrow then await the results of the tests. Vet seems to think it will be cancerous and will have spread due to lymph symptoms. Anyone else had this experience? Bit worried I've done the wrong thing and should have just had him pts. Worried about his after are too! He does seem to have list muscle tone over the past month too. Wondering if the insurance will pay out and hope they don't try and say it was a pre existing condition. Such a shame, he's an absolute gentleman and only 7 :( would be grateful to hear anyone's experience/ advice

I'm sorry, I don't have a happy story to tell, although the horse I knew was much older.

A friend of mine had a super 14.2 pony club pony, in his late teens, who had a growth on his penis. They monitored it, and after a year of watching it grow slowly, removed it. Sadly, that seemed to cause it to expand rapidly, and within 6 months they had to decide to PTS.

Hope your boy has a different outcome, but sounds like you are prepared for the decision if you do have to make it :0(

Hi,

I had a 13hh retired 18 year old Connemara x pony who had this. The tumour on his was barely noticeable and only got vet out as he kept kicking his sheath it was bleeding flies were driving him crazy. Vet instantly said it was cancerous and amputation or euthanasia were the only options. We opted for amputation and he went in within the next week. The surgeon came up from England (I'm in Scotland) and performed it as our vet practice were very honest and said it would be the best results using this other surgeon. The surgery was a success and we had been told there was something like an 80% success rate of horses surviving after 2 years without the cancer returning. Also when he was getting the operation they found out the cancer had spread to the surrounding lymphnodes and removed them. The surgery required a lot of after care as he was at the vets for over a week with drains etc and had something like a total of 1000 stitches internally and externally. All was a success though and he lived until he was 23 and the cancer never returned!

Given my previous experience with the surgery I would definitely go ahead with it as it gave my five more years to spend with us (he was pts due to laminitis)

I have known of a few that had their penis removed and a uretha made under the tail and they are fine, it is like anything in life, what might work for one does not work for another. Good luck.

No I hadn't. Thank you. The vet did say that the prepuce was covered in lumps and they couldn't leave it but often when they are removed it makes the situation much worse. Was the swelling and oedema an infection or was it a sign the cancer had spread? Sorry if I sound stupid!!! The waiting for news is horrible!!!!

So just an update... The results say he has sarcoids! A relief but struggling to believe a few days it was such a pesemistic outlook and he was nearly pts. The vet has taken bloods to send off today though as she still seems perplexed as to why he had such a swelling and oedema. Now it's a venture into the sarcoid unknown for me! Apparently they'll keep coming back and need removing. Trouble is there are none his extremities... Yet!!!!

Having looked at this thread and a previous thread posted on this one I am getting seriously worried. My boy has a bit of a swollen sheath which I put down to restricted box rest.

He has always been one to hang it out until, probably a year or so ago. He also lost pigment on said member at about the same time. Another pony on same yard had pink showing on his face, can't remember the correct name for it! So assumed that was the same sort of thing.

I have usually cleaned his sheath probably once a year, after winter in at nights. He is a lot grubbier these days and thought he was turning into a 'dirty old man'.

If his sheath doesn't go down in next few days, or seems worse or hot will call vet sooner.
Now panicing.

I understand your concerns Janah. My horses sheath is still really swollen despite having a 1 1/2 antibiotics. I'm still unclear wether the swelling is linked to the lumps or if it's an unrelated infection. I presume the blood test is to see if the infection remains. The thing is that swollen sheaths can be a sign of so many problems from what I've read such as kidney troubles so a vet would at least put your mind at rest... Or not as the case maybe! Hope all turns out ok.
