I joined in with the Penny Sangster clinic on my 4 yr old last night, as it was the first time I’ve done anything like that with him I thought I’d do a little report

Bit of background, Sparky is an opinionated little oink, who knows nothing but thinks he can take over the world, likes to buck and squeak and generally argue

. Last two weeks he has been taken right back to basics, as although he done some bits and bobs last year, it was all wrong and too fast so we thought he could learn it properly this time.

As he’s been such an oink for the last week I really thought I would only stay in there for 5 mins warm up before I called it a night - as it was he was going really well! There were 6 of us in the group, and he can get quite anxious working with others (just really green). Penny reckoned the trick to him will be really pushing him on so that he can’t get so up in the air. He was jumping really well, a little rushy through combinations to start with but soon relaxed and a couple of times he really did jump underneath me and it felt great! He was still bucking after every grid but only bronco type ones (don’t mind those, LOL). He worked at least twice as hard as everyone else as Penny wouldn’t let him rest for one minute until he ‘gave in’, which he did do eventually!

He started to get a bit grouchy and tired near the end of the lesson and on approaching the grid he was really behind my leg going into the first X pole, Penny shouted ‘push him forwards’ – so I kicked him on and he orbited me into space

!!!! Little sod. His little tiny ‘clamber over’ the x pole jump suddenly turned into this huge kick back and hunch, by that time we were committed to the next fence, a spread of x poles (I was already slightly unseated by this point) which he just launched over, top of the wings then buried his head on landing and ran right through the next jump and I landed on the wing somewhere! Luckily unhurt, just because I put my leg on and he’d had enough

. So got back on, Penny said she was impressed I stayed on as long as I did,

! Then everyone else waited whilst he went over and over the grid by himself and the fences were going higher– all foot perfect !! Finished off after he did all three parts at about 2’9 and calmly and using his back etc.

I’m so gutted he did that as apart from that I was over the moon with him. I think it was just getting a bit too busy for him in there with 6 of us and it all
