This is ghastly to watch - who wants to start a petition for them to substitute BMX bike riding for showjumping?

I think they should make it so each competitor must have gained a certificate of competency before being allowed to ride - and if they do that already then they should make it more stringent!

Plus the course is far too big for mainly novicey riders on unknown horses. They really do need to make some changes to the sport in the interests of horse welfare.

Whatever you say...it was disgusting. you have a warped sense of entertainment.

If anyone feels really strongly about this, go onto the bbc complaints site and e-mail them about it. i know the riding isnt their fault but the commentators attitude to it was horrible. "suffering at the hooves" - IDIOT!
on one of their video highlights on their website underneath it says the horse "does not want to play the game". This is a shocking attitude to what we all saw today.

i think there are far worse things to petition about than a few "crap" horses being ridden by "crap" riders, TBH.....

Try putting your energy into averting REAL cruelty...live transportation, overworked ponies/donkeys/horses in 3rd world countries, closure of Slaughterhouses in America/Europe, worldwide transportation of horses/ponies, mares n foals, donkeys to be in-humanely slaughtered in 3rd rate abbatoirs...

how folk on here can get so uptight about a few horses doing 2 rounds of showjumping...badly...is beyond me....

yes but those things are the sort that most people are completely against. the horrible thing about this is how the bbc seem to have "noramlised" it in the coverage. yes there are worse things i agree but seeing one of the horses roll its eyes from pain or the excessive use of whips.
the other things you mention have people trying desparetly to stop them, with this its almost like it was ok for them to be like that so they can get a medal.
if you went to a bsja show or actually, any show, that wouldnt be allowed to stand, most likely they'd be eliminated. it just wouldnt happen!

look, i dont care if you think i'm being "emotive" ok?

yes, one was rolling its eyes as it was having its mouth pulled around. and yes the use of whips in some (only one or two) was excessive.

i dont care if you missed it, thats what i saw and frankly it was disgusting, i dont see how riding like that can be defended, yes the horses werent the best but its not fair to put them in there and expect them to jump that height.

oh get off your soapbox, will you.

you have as much chance of getting anything done about a totally something and nothing occurance, as i have of becoming the next pope..

yes, it wasnt pretty, yes, a few horses were pulled about....it's hardly life and death is it???

good grief....

as for the commentators......as someone said about the horses..they didnt ask to be there..they are allocated commemtary duties...justthe same as most of the horses and riders...they didnt have a clue.

what soapbox?!

i'm just saying what i saw - not being emotive.

i'm also saying it was appalling riding on less than able horses.

i didnt say i was going to get something done about it, but i can voice my concern.

please stop tring to belittle my opinion.

you dont think it was that bad, i do. simple as. back off.

me! i dont appreciate being accused of being on a soapbox or just being "emotive".

i'm sorry that we disagree and i'm trying really hard not to downgrade this into an arguement, i just feel like i'm being singled out for some reason. i think this should just be the end of this little discussion.

agree to disagree which is fair enough. i can respect your opinion as different to mine and hopefully we can continue discussions on here without any more fuss.

Okay, so will be interestnig to see what H&H have to say.

Are we agreed that:

commentators - crap.

standard of riding - could be better

height of fences and course in general - defintely unsuitable

horses - maybe a bit too challenging for riders?

general organisation of event - TERRIBLE!!!

Or is that just me???

JUST watched the video and am shocked and appalled!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Also a bit disapproving of how the BBC made light of the frankly dangerous and very serious falls in that video.

This is horrendous - if a showjumping class at a novicey local show went like that there would be instant uproar.
