Does it really work and how long was it before you see improvements ,
I have a 3 yr mare who in the last year hasn't been herself , she's had all test under the sun done to her to find out if there is any underlining problems , she had teeth done , wormed etc she developed mild colic , and at one point me and vet had our droughts to whether she had grass sickness , but no , she start picking up and now gone back down again , I'm going to change course of direction in food ( surrgested by vet ) and see , I'm going to start of with very mild changes and see , I have ordered alfa a oil but never really used it so never seen results , any info much appricated

I used alphabeet and alpha A oil together and I think there was an improvement in our poor doer. At one point I was feeding three smallish meals per day.

I have also used Coolstance Copra on the same pony. It's cocoanut based and contains alot of oil and is good for weight gain.

I've used it for condition rather than weight gain andthe horse looked fantastic on it.

What is you current feeding regime and management?

Many people on here Sr to rate simple systems feeds.

Redmills is also excellent.

Oil is high in calories but depending on what you currently feed and amounts of what you currently feed it may or may not make a difference.

Heathy horses will loose weight when they are expelling more calories than they are intaking so it will depend on how many calories she had been intaking compared to how many she will be getting from new diet.

What was she on?

I've got one which I have had trouble keeping at a decent weight since I bought her, she's been on Pure Feeds Condition for a couple of months now and looking the best she ever has, I'm very pleased with it

Hi sorry for late reply trying to cook dinner , anyway she is on 2 round scoop of mare and young stock mix (she's just turned 3 so looking at changing that ) , 1 apple chaff , 1round scoop of sugar beet and swig of corn oil and vits ,unlimited hay been done twice daily , but have increased to 3 to separate it for her to digest more easy ,vet seems to think its ok but surgested in trying to replace apple chaff for alfa a oil

I put my daughters 3/4 TB on Dengie Alfa A oil about 5 weeks ago and his condition has improved immensley. he is only 3 (4 next month) and his coat seemed dull, he was a bit ribby etc, but now his coat is shiny and although I can feel his ribs under the skin, zi can't see them. i'm really pleased with this feed, and I have ony been giving him a small double handful twice a day with a small scoop of nuts.

Lots of food in two feeds. Split them in to 3. Make sure hay is completely ad lib, and get her on to some event grazing (I'm guessing its not great).

Then make sure your youngster has access to hay 24/7. That is possibly your problem. That, plus splitting her hard feed ration in to 3 should make a difference very quickly.

def dump the apple chaff. i would be tempted to get your horse onto fast fibre (allen and page) horses need to live on long stem fibre and relatively low cal food.

If she has had colic the best feed would be low starch as this can be a problem for those prone to it.

Mare and young stock mix is high in starch (cereal based) and as she is 3 she doesn't need to be on a stud feed anymore. Oil and fibre is the best feed for underweight horses who are prone to colic as it is high in calories but a safe energy source, horses can digest it better. Mare and young stock is high in calories so make sure what you choose to feed follows same cal content but low in starch. Look for feeds around 10% starch max.

Adlib hay as well
